'He gets the vote': Troy Deeney names Nottingham Forest player in his Premier League Team of the Season

Nottingham Forest have enjoyed a superb season in the Premier League, in which they secured European football for the first time in 30 years.

Indeed, Nottingham Forest were in the picture for Champions League qualification until the very last day of the Premier League season.

Forest secured a number of notable victories, including wins at Anfield and Old Trafford, and doubles over Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Now, Troy Deeney has named one of Forest’s stars in his Premier League Team of the Season, along with several honourable mentions.

Troy Deeney names Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels in his Premier League Team of the Season

Deeney gave honourable mentions to Forest defenders Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo for their heroics at the back this season.

He also had Reds manager Nuno Espirito Santo on his shortlist for Manager of the Season along with Eddie Howe, though Arne Slot took the accolade.

The one Forest individual who made Deeney’s Team of the Season is goalkeeper Matz Sels, who has been a real game-changer for the Reds this term.

“Sels ended up sharing the Premier League Golden Glove with Arsenal’s David Raya – but I just think for the season that Forest have had, he gets the vote,” Gakpo wrote on BBC Sport.

“Yes, the Forest front players have been exceptional but he has pulled off big saves more or less every week.

“When you look at the team Raya has in front of him and the team Sels has in front of him, the Forest keeper has been better.”

Joe Cole named Sels as his goalkeeper of the season as far back as February, and it proved an inspired call as he has impressed all season.

How Matz Sels reacted to winning Golden Glove award alongside David Raya

Sels’ 13 clean sheets for Nottingham Forest saw him share the Premier League Golden Glove award alongside Arsenal’s David Raya.

The Belgium international spoke after Forest’s final-day loss to Chelsea and described it as a big achievement for the team as well as for himself.

“It’s a big achievement so I’m really happy but not only for me but for the team,” he told Sky Sports after the final game of the season against Chelsea.

“It means we had a great season, almost the whole season on a Champions League spot.

“Sadly we couldn’t finish it today, but we need to be proud of the season we’ve had. We will play in Europe.

“When I came last year, I came in a difficult situation. This kind of achievement is always from the team. It’s the same if a striker scores a lot of goals.”
