Former Lakers 1st-Rounder Linked to L.A.'s Rival for Potential Offseason Trade

A former Los Angeles Lakers first-round pick was a [part of this week's rumor mill](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25199464-chris-paul-lonzo-ball-jrue-holiday-trade-reportedly-linked-mavs-amid-nba-rumors) with the Dallas Mavericks chasing an upgrade at point guard. It is too bad the franchise doesn't have the luxury of Los Angeles boasting a generational shot maker and creator in star Laker Luka Dončić. However, the team does have former Laker Anthony Davis and will almost assuredly be drafting Duke product Cooper Flagg later this summer. This, along with Kyrie Irving's injury, has led the team to search for a potential point man.

Among the potential targets are Chris Paul, Jrue Holiday, and former Laker Lonzo Ball. The former point guard remains one of the most frustrating decisions in franchise history. Ball was selected over Jayson Tatum and De'Aaron Fox. It doesn't help matters that Tatum is now one of the league's brightest stars and was a big Kobe Bryant and Lakers fan. Still, there is no reversing history, and Ball is an important piece of the team's past.

Former Laker Lonzo Ball Could Find His Way to a Surprise Contender this Offseason

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since leaving the [Lakers](https://lasportshub.com/young-laker-is-on-thin-ice-1-month-before-nba-draft-01jw6nvzv8nz), Ball has dealt with consistent injuries both with the New Orleans Pelicans and the Chicago Bulls. Either team wanting to turn the page on the point guard doesn't come as a huge surprise. For the Mavericks, the fit makes far more sense than a potential deal with Chris Paul. Flagg and Davis are both lengthy defenders who offer you the ability to consistently switch without major issues.

Putting Lonzo Ball as the primary point guard in the middle of this offense makes a great degree of sense. The former Laker is a willing defender and isn't going to take away shots from the Mavericks' star players. It could be the perfect addition to a team that lucked into the number one pick after making the horrible decision to trade Luka.

Jrue Holiday could be a great fit as well if the Boston Celtics do attempt to get below the second apron after their frustrating playoff exit. No question, whether it is with the Mavericks or elsewhere, the former Laker point guard is going to be a sought-after veteran commodity in the 2025 offseason.
