Roy Keane’s warning to Erik ten Hag 9 months ago now looks laughable as Man Utd’s disastrous season concludes

It’s been a nightmare of a season for Manchester United, whether that was under Erik ten Hag or Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United’s lowest points tally ever was not the campaign Red Devils supporters anticipated coming off the back of an FA Cup win last season, and seemingly, some solid summer recruitment from Ineos.

Alas, it was to be a season of misery at Old Trafford. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and went trophyless after a bitter Europa League final defeat in Bilbao.

A shock to many – including Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit, Roy Keane.

Roy Keane warned Erik ten Hag he can’t be finishing eighth

At the beginning of the season, Keane told the new Bayern Leverkusen manager that he “can’t” be finishing eighth again and predicted that the Red Devils must be “competing” for the top four next season.

“The cup game gave him [Ten Hag] some breathing space and rightly so, but he can’t be finishing eighth next year,” Keane said on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show back in August 2024.

“They [Manchester United] have to be competing next year in the top four, it’s going to be hard to win but it’s about competing, the records they’ve created the last 12 months in the league, it’s so poor.”

Yikes, how about 15th with an entirely new manager instead, Roy?

The fact eighth was deemed unacceptable at the start of the season truly shows just how abysmal the 24/25 campaign was around Old Trafford.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher predicted 4th and 5th for the Red Devils

It wasn’t just Keane among the pundits to predict United would obtain moderate success. Gary Neville had the Red Devils finishing in fourth under Ten Hag, whilst Jamie Carragher suggested they’ll finish fifth.

When it comes to predictions made for the 25/26 season, we can’t see United being in the top half of many.

A lot will depend on Amorim’s summer window. United look to have captured Matheus Cunha, but with fewer funds and no European football, it will be harder to lure signings to Old Trafford.

One thing’s for certain, there will be outgoings for Manchester United, with seemingly quite a few playing their last game against Aston Villa for the Red Devils.
