'The gaffer has mentioned': Newcastle star now expecting 'probably a big summer' after Eddie…

The existing players at Newcastle United appear keen to have the squad strengthened this summer.

It has been a fallow period for Newcastle United on the incoming front. Club owners PIF have not been able to strengthen Eddie Howe’s squad to any meaningful degree since the summer of 2023, due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

However, that could change this summer. The Newcastle United owners now appear to be in a position to back Howe in the transfer market.

Indeed, Newcastle could have a transfer budget of £150million ahead of the 2025/26 season. In even better news, Newcastle are confident about their PSR position heading into the deadline on June 30.

Bruno Guimaraes has urged Newcastle to make signings this summer and teammate Dan Burn is now predicting new faces to arrive.

Dan Burn shares what will happen at Newcastle United this summer

Speaking after Sunday’s defeat at home to Everton, Burn admitted he expected players to sign for the club this summer.

Interestingly, he actually referenced Howe’s message that the club simply haven’t brought in a first-team player in a while.

Speaking at his press conference after the game, the Newcastle United manager said: “We haven’t signed sort of a major, big signing in three transfer windows.”

Burn, meanwhile, said (via The Northern Echo): “The gaffer has mentioned that we’ve not strengthened in the last few seasons, so it’ll probably be a big summer to add players and sort of keep it fresh.

“It’s probably just going to be that change of mentality where we really get that belief that we should be up there.”

How many signings Newcastle United want to make this summer

PSR restraints impact every club, so it seems unlikely they will suddenly disappear entirely.

Still, Howe wants Newcastle to make at least four signings this summer. The club are reportedly chasing a new centre-back, a right-winger, a striker and a goalkeeper ahead of next season.

Quite whether or not signing big-name players in every position listed above is possible remains to be seen.

However, the mood certainly feels a lot more positive heading into this summer compared to last. With Champions League football back on the agenda and a Carabao Cup in the bank, Howe deserves the chance to spend again.
