The man understood to be the driver of the car that ploughed through crowds during the Liverpool parade can be seen "stalling" before continuing to "plough through" more members of the public.

This evening Merseyside Police arrested a 53-year-old white British man at Water Street after footage showed a car hitting Liverpool football fans enjoying a day of celebrating their team winning the Premier League.

Now, in horrific clip seen by the Daily Star, a male behind the wheel of a black vehicle can be seen stalling momentarily, before steaming forwards into a screaming crowd. At one point the driver's door is opened by a crowd member, but it's quickly shut as the car accelerates. We have decided not to share the video.

In the video you can see a crowd swearing towards the man in a black people carrier. He reverses the car as they shout towards him. But then he speeds up and sounds his horn before speeding up. The door opens for a second before the clip ends.

Merseyside Police said in a statement: "We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre. We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.

"Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision."

Eyewitnesses accounts shared to Sky News recount the moment they had to jump out of the way of the vehicle as it drove through the crowds. Speaking to outlet Chelsea Yuen said: "We were literally like sardines walking up the street, and then we heard beeping and screaming and when we looked up, there was a black, people carrier, driving straight towards us.

"Me and my friend Francesca jumped out the way and pulled her little girl out the way."

Another video shows cops swarming the vehicle and keeping members of the crowd away. A caption under the video said: "Some maniac just ran everyone over. People stuck under the car got absolutely battered. Car doors ripped off."

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling - my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.
