Liverpool casualties to be announced at press conference after car'drives into crowds'during parade

Police in Liverpool will hold a press conference later this evening after a car drove into crowds of football fans celebrating title victory in the city centre.

The horror incident took place on Water Street at 6pm. Cops detained a male at the scene after the vehicle stopped.

It has been confirmed he has since been arrested. The suspect, 53, is from the Liverpool area. Detectives are expected to hold a press conference surrounding the incident at 10.30pm.

The North West Ambulance Service will also be in attendance and are expected to update the public on casualty numbers.

The meeting will be held in the Cunard Building on Water Street.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "North West Ambulance Service has now cleared the scene following the incident in Liverpool and will be updating on casualty numbers at a press conference scheduled for later tonight.

"Details of this will be announced shortly."

Meanwhile, police say inquiries into the collision are ongoing.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: “We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.

“We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

“We would ask people not to share distressing content online but to send the footage or information directly to us @MerPolCC or pass on information by calling 101 quoting log 784.

“Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Horror footage shared in the aftermath showed fans desperately running toward the car after it stopped, in order to apprehend the driver.

Liverpool FC issued thoughts and prayers for everyone involved in the incident during its celebration parade.

A Liverpool FC statement read: "We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.

"We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident."
