"My agent met the club last week": £36m Liverpool star confirms fresh contract talks with FSG

Liverpool and Ibrahima Konate are engaged in talks to extend the French defender’s contract, who says he is happy to be at the club.

Konate had perhaps his best season for Liverpool and with his contract set to expire at the end of next season, it’s imperative that FSG renew his terms to avoid losing him for free.

Real Madrid are interested in signing him alongside William Saliba and are happy to wait until their contracts run out to sign them for free just as they have done with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Now officially a Premier League champion, Konate must pick between strengthening his legacy at Anfield or seeking a new adventure elsewhere.

At 26, this is a pivotal time in his career and if Liverpool can keep him around, they will be

Konate shares where he’s at with Liverpool contract renegotiation talks

After Liverpool lifted the Premier League title at Anfield, Konate stopped in the mixed press zone to speak to journalists and he shared a little insight on his talks with the club over a new contract.

Konate said: “To win a trophy, even when I won my first trophy with Liverpool, the FA Cup, was just amazing.

“And today, to win the Premier League, I know I have a lot of objectives with this club: to become a leader, to win everything. I am very happy here to be fair, you know.

“(Contract talks progressing?) Not really but my agent met the club last week but I don’t know what will happen.

“I cannot say what my agent said to me but yeah, we will see what will happen.”

Liverpool need a centre-back so selling Konate will complicate things

As things stand, Liverpool need at least one centre-back signing after a season of hoping and praying Konate and van Dijk would remain fit.

Jarell Quansah simply isn’t the man to command the Liverpool backline and Joe Gomez has been injured the whole season. Arne Slot was keen on Dean Huijsen but the Spaniard joined Real Madrid so it will be interesting to see who does join.

Konate, though, would ideally sign a new deal but if he rejects Liverpool’s terms they must sell him this summer to avoid a repeat of the Trent Alexander-Arnold debacle.

The former RB Leipzig star reportedly earns £70,000 per week which, for one of the best centre-backs in the world, isn’t good enough. He should see his wages double or more to around £150,000 per week plus.
