Liverpool FC parade updates as emergency services say 47 injured including children

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said: “I want to thank all of the emergency services, partner agencies and members of the public who came to the assistance of the injured following this evening’s shocking incident, which we declared a major incident.

“A number of people have been injured and were taken to hospital,” she added.

Everton FC's official X account posted a touching statement of solidarity in a repost of earler words from Liverpool FC.

It said: "Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this serious incident in our city."

In a post on X following the incident, NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool asked people help try and keep swtichboards clear, as those with loved ones at the event called to check they were ok.

The man understood to be the driver of the car that ploughed through crowds during the Liverpool parade can be seen "stalling" before continuing to "plough through" more members of the public.

Now, in horrific clip seen by the Daily Star, a male behind the wheel of a black vehicle can be seen stalling momentarily, before steaming forwards into a screaming crowd.

A post on the station's official X account, part of Network Rail, said: "We know many people have been waiting outside in the rain - some for a long period.

"We’re sorry for the delays and are working to allow as many people into and through the station as it’s safe to do so.

Fans trying to leave the city centre have reportedly been getting stuck in massive queues.

Images on social media appear to show massive corwds of static people outside the city's main station.

"Liverpool lime street is an absolute joke," one person said alongside footage of crowds.

Another wrote: "Horrible outside Liverpool Lime Street right now... We were in there for an hour and a half. I hope everyone can get home safe."

Posting on X, one person seeminlgly at the parade said: "Does anyone know when the tunnels into Liverpool will be open?"

Matthew O’Carroll, 28, from Runcorn, saw the car approaching, according to PA.

He said: “We were walking up Water Street and approaching the top of the road and the vehicle came past a parked police van at a decent speed.

“People managed to get out of the way as he was beeping as he went through but as he went past, people were obviously very angry and so started running after the car.

“The back window of the car was already smashed.

“I thought that once it went past us, it was just someone that was trying to get away from something and would slow down when he got to more people.”

“It happened about 10 feet away from us," said.

He added: “It was extremely fast. Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car."

Images from press agencies show people on stretchers, while footage taken by people at the scene shows people being hit by the car as it moves at speed.

An exact casualty count has not been confirmed by authorities.

A man has been detained by police, police have said.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.

"We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.

"Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision."
