Police confirms Liverpool parade car incident is not being treated as act of terrorism

Merseyside Police have informed the public that a car crash during Liverpool’s Premier League title celebrations is not being treated as an act of terrorism.

Once the trophy parade had drawn to a close, a black SUV was spotted barreling into Liverpool fans that remained gathered on Water Street near the end of the 10-mile route. Several eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying screams of Reds supporters and brave actions of several individuals who attempted to bring the vehicle to a halt.

First responders and officers swiftly jumped into action to aid those who were injured in the harrowing incident. A local Italian restaurant was converted into a makeshift emergency room, while an air ambulance touched down in the Liverpool city center.

As droves of concerned family members and friends attempted to learn more about the status of their impacted loved ones, the NHS University Liverpool Group implored people to refrain from calling — insisting that the next of kin will be contacted once information is available.

In light of the tragic event, Meyerside Police announced in a statement that a 53-year-old "white British man" from the Liverpool area was detained.

During an ensuing press conference, deputy chief constable Jenny Sims shared that officials believe that the car crash was an isolated incident that is not being treated as terrorism. Police are not actively looking for anyone else related to it.

"The car stopped at the scene and a 53 year old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested," Sims stated. "We believe him to be the driver of the vehicle.

"Extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision and it is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media. I know that people will understandably be concerned by what has happened tonight.

"What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. The incident is not being treated as terrorism."

As of writing, 20 minor injuries were treated at the scene of the crash. 27 individuals were rushed to the hospital, with two people — including one child — sustaining serious injuries.

Liverpool F.C. offered thoughts and prayers to those who were impacted and confirmed they were in direct talks with police.

“We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening," the club wrote.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.

“We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”
