POLICE have arrested a 53-year-old man after a car ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians at Liverpool FC’s victory parade.

The man is being described a ‘white British’ and ‘from the Liverpool area’.

The incident occurred around 6.10pm on Water Street, shortly after Liverpool’s open-top tour bus passed by on the Strand at the end of its 10-mile route.

The BBC are reporting the car was travelling down Water Street towards the Strand when it collided with the pedestrians.

A corresponded for the Corporation, who was covering the parade, said he witnessed at least three people being taken to hospital.

The air ambulance also landed at the scene, according to the BBC.

The whole area was closed to traffic due to the parade.

One looker-on said they thought an ambulance may have driven into the path of the car, which was reportedly travelling between 20 and 30mph, to try stop it.

Footage shows police cordons in place around the heavily littered road, with a large police presence, ambulances, and a fire engine also at the scene.

Liverpool FC held an open-top bus parade to celebrate its Premier League triumph, with hundred of thousands of fans lining the streets along the 10-mile route.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.

“We would ask people not to share distressing content online but to send the footage or information directly to us @MerPolCC or pass on information by calling 101 quoting log 784.

“Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said: “We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services.

“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”

Prime Minister, Kier Starmer, took to social media to address what had happened.

He said: “The scenes in Liverpool are appalling.

“My thoughts are with all those injured or affected.

“I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.

“I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate.”
