FIFA president Gianni Infantino offered his thoughts and prayers to those who were impacted by the horrifying incident that took place during Liverpool’s Premier League title celebrations.
At approximately 6 p.m. local time on Monday, a black SUV plowed into dozens of Reds supporters that were gathered on Water Street near the end of the 10-mile parade route. Several eyewitnesses recounted the frightened yells of Liverpool fans and heroic actions of several individuals who tried to slow the vehicle down.
As of writing, 47 people sustained injuries as a result of the crash — 27 of whom were taken to the hospital. As droves of concerned loved ones attempted to find out more information about their friends and family who were hurt, the NHS University Liverpool Group asked that people stop flooding their phone lines.
While addressing the media during a televised press conference, deputy chief constable Jenny Sims confirmed that Merseyside Police detained a 53-year-old "white British man" from the Liverpool area who they believe was driving the vehicle in question. Officials are not treating the event as an act of terrorism.
In light of Monday’s tragedy, Infantino voiced his support for Liverpool and the club’s loyal fanbase. “Football stands together with Liverpool FC and all fans of the club following the horrific incident that has taken place during the trophy parade in the city,” he said.
“From everyone at FIFA, we offer our thoughts and prayers to all those affected."
Liverpool F.C. confirmed they were in direct talks with Merseyside Police, writing in an official statement: “We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening.

"We have been in contact with Liverpool FC and have offered our full support following this serious incident."
Sims reassured the public that officials were working hard to understand what led to the car crash. "Extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision and it is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media,” she said.
“I know that people will understandably be concerned by what has happened tonight.
"What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. The incident is not being treated as terrorism."
