Fate of Manchester United rests on club's biggest weakness, but Ineos have shown positive signs - Opinion

The future of Manchester United rests firmly on the next few months, as this summer is a potential turning point for the club.

After a decade of mediocrity, the 2024-25 season was the straw that broke the camel’s back as Manchester United landed 15th place.

This left Ruben Amorim picking up the pieces of a worst-ever Premier League campaign, despite ending on a high note as United beat Aston Villa 2-0.

Following this game, Amorim addressed a potentially hostile Old Trafford and turned up the pressure for next season with a rousing speech which promised that the “good days are coming”.

Amorim’s words have got fans believing, and now it is up to the club to back the head coach. This will decide the fate of the club with next season being make or break.

The transfer window is where the difference can be made.

Manchester United must get recruitment correct this summer

The coming months are among the most important transfer decisions for United in a long time.

Without a strong summer of recruitment, next season could once again prove to be a troublesome campaign. Therefore, considering how low the club has sunk, nothing but significant improvements will be accepted by the fanbase.

However, strong transfer windows have not been common for Manchester United over the last 15 years.

Transfers in general have been the club’s biggest weakness since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in particular, with only Bruno Fernandes considered an indisputable success story.

This must end under Ineos this summer, and those in charge have already given us signs to be confident.

Despite only being in charge for two transfer windows, Ineos have already made plenty of arrivals, both young and in their prime.

Ineos has shown positive signs in transfer window

Despite the absolute shambles that was United’s recruitment under Ed Woodward and Richard Arnold, which saw £64m spent on Rasmus Hojlund and £86m on Antony to mention a few, things have improved under Ineos.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe accused Woodward of knowing nothing about football, and many fans would agree with this after putting up with his terrible recruitment.

However, in the two windows under Ineos, there have been some excellent deals with Mazraoui looking like a bargain piece of business at just £12m. Meanwhile, signing the world’s premier young centre-back ahead of Real Madrid in Yoro is also a big success story.

In addition, United’s youth recruitment has been impressive and a real reason to be excited for the upcoming summer. Ineos has to get it right, but the signs are there to suggest they will do what is required.

Adding Matheus Cunha is certainly a good start.
