Tottenham could now use UCL factor in negotiations to hijack Man United's move for £50m attacker - opinion

Despite finishing one spot below Manchester United in 17th place in the Premier League table during the 2024/2025 season, Tottenham Hotspur have become a more attractive destination for players to join due to winning the Europa League.

Tottenham banked £10.95 million from the Europa League after winning the competition and having secured their place in Europe’s elite competition, they must be prepared to spend big this summer.

Manchester United, on the other hand, are in desperate need to go on a spending spree this summer after enduring their most dismal season in the Premier League era.

With Ruben Amorim set to stay next season, United will have to support the Portuguese tactician’s vision or brace themselves for having another disappointing campaign.

Tottenham should hijack Manchester United’s move for Bryan Mbeumo

Bryan Mbeumo is on Manchester United’s radar but considering Tottenham have snatched their hopes of playing Champions League football in the following campaign, they should use this very factor to their advantage by trying to sign him.

Before the Europa League final, United outperforming Spurs in the league coupled with their track record of lifting trophies may have been deemed as enough for them to sign Mbeumo over the Lilywhites.

However, the Red Devils seem to be quite advanced in their pursuit to sign the Brentford attacker after holding talks to sign him, who journalist Ben Jacobs revealed is valued at £50 million.

Thierry Henry called Mbeumo a “gem” and the Cameroonian international deserves such high praise, registering 20 goals and seven assists for Thomas Frank’s side in the league.

Tottenham’s top scorer in the league was Brennan Johnson, on the other hand, who just scored 11 goals and the addition of a productive, Premier League-proven forward could change their fortunes.

With Mbeumo capable of playing as a number 10, up front and as a right-winger, Tottenham would massively benefit from having such a versatile attacking force in their ranks.

Heung-min Son has been in poor form, as have been most of Spurs’ attacking players unlike the Bees hero, who at 25 could emerge as a leader in a side that also features several young and inexperienced figures.

How Ange Postecoglou privately feels about Bryan Mbeumo

Perhaps the only advantage Manchester United would have over Tottenham in a potential race to sign Mbeumo is that Ange Postecoglou’s future remains uncertain.

Ruben Amorim, on the other hand, seems to have the faith from United’s board to lead their project after having tried his hand at rescuing them mid-season.

But if the Spurs boss stays, Tottenham fans will be delighted to hear that Ange Postecoglou is a huge fan of Mbeumo and in theory, he would be on board with them trying to sign him over Manchester United.

Whether Postecoglou’s side decide to up the ante to sign the former Troyes wideman remains to be seen.
