Aston Villa linked Caoimhin Kelleher is prepared to leave Liverpool this summer in order to consider himself a number one goalkeeper elsewhere, the player himself has admitted. Irish international Kelleher has been understudy to Reds first choice Alisson in recent years, and the competition will only increase next season when Giorgi Mamardashvili arrives from Valencia, after a deal was agreed last summer.
Kelleher is now 26 and has been at Liverpool for ten years when moving over from Ireland. He has racked up 67 appearances since making his debut in 2019 under Jurgen Klopp, but the majority of his run-outs at Alisson's expense have come in various cup competitions or in Europe.
The stopper, whose last appearance was at the beginning of April in the defeat to Fulham, knows he will have to leave Anfield in order to become a first choice keeper in his own right and, amid links with Villa - who are in need of at least one new goalkeeper this summer transfer window - Kelleher has publicly admitted as much.
“I think I’ve said it before as well that I feel like I’m good enough to be a number one,” Kelleher said after Liverpool's final day draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield, on the day they lifted the Premier League trophy.
“I feel like I’m good enough to play week in, week out – and that’s what I’m looking to do. This season I was lucky enough to play a lot of games, but it’s definitely something I’m looking at.”
Villa could bid farewell to first choice Emiliano Martinez, who has been strongly linked with a move away from Villa Park in recent weeks despite signing a new long-term deal with the club last summer. Robin Olsen has already left since the season's end and has returned to his native Sweden, with Malmo.
