Barcelona’s search for a goalkeeper has taken yet another twist following Joan Garcia’s latest social media activity, which has left many speculating about his next move.
Barça are still unsure about who will be their backup or even starting goalkeeper next season. Wojciech Szczesny is yet to confirm his stay, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen, though recovering well, remains a question mark following his long injury layoff.
In light of this, Barcelona have identified Garcia as a possible solution, and reports indicate that the 24-year-old has already said ‘yes’ to a move.
What has happened since?
However, just as the speculation seemed to be gaining momentum, Garcia appeared to throw cold water on it all with a surprising post on social media.
The goalkeeper published a heartfelt message celebrating Espanyol’s promotion back to La Liga, accompanied by a photo of him kissing the club’s badge. His caption read:
“We made it, Parakeets! It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve achieved the objective and Espanyol will be in the First Division for another year, where they should be.
“Thank you very much for your support, you have carried us to the end. You deserved it!”
The timing of the post has raised eyebrows. While his tribute to the Espanyol fans could simply be a show of gratitude, many now wonder if it might signal his intention to stay, at least temporarily.
The market is still open
Despite this, sources close to the situation suggest that his departure is still highly likely. Crucially, Garcia has not been called up by Luis de la Fuente for the Spanish national team, which means his release clause remains at €25 million.
For a goalkeeper of his calibre and potential, that figure is considered relatively low in today’s inflated transfer market, making him a highly attractive option for several clubs.
Barcelona are not alone in the race, as multiple teams across Europe are said to be monitoring Garcia closely, and with Espanyol likely needing to balance their books following their return to the top flight, a sale seems inevitable.
For now, Joan Garcia’s future remains unresolved, caught between loyalty to his boyhood club and the lure of a new challenge at the highest level.
