Christopher Nkunku has decided to leave Chelsea in the summer and Tottenham Hotspur is one of the clubs who are interested in signing the centre-forward.
The Blues had paid €60 million to sign the Frenchman from RB Leipzig but constant injury issues have turned him into a flop signing. Since 2023, he’s made just 56 appearances for the club and Enzo Maresca wants him sold before the next season begins. Clubs like Newcastle United and Juventus have been linked with the 27-year-old but thanks to their recent Europa League win, Tottenham are fancying their chances.
According to Fichajes and a few others, Spurs are exploring a loan deal for Christopher Nkunku. They wish to sign the forward on a one-year loan deal with a €45 million option to buy at the end of the season.
Is the Frenchman a good fit for Spurs?
Christopher Nkunku was one of the most exciting players in Germany since 2019 till 2023 and in 172 appearances for Leipzig, he scored 70 goals and provided 55 assists.
He has been a shadow of his past self at Chelsea but if he can remain injury-free, the 27-year-old will thrive under Postecoglou next season. He will have very little competition up top because Tottenham Hotspur only have Dominic Solanke as their primary centre-forward. Apart from playing as a centre-forward, Christopher Nkunku can also play as an attacking midfielder and as a left-winger.
This versatility can be a major asset for Ange because the 27-year-old can provide backup to multiple positions and by signing him, Spurs will be able to save a lot of their finances.
At Spurs he will get the chance to play in the Champions League next season and because of the added number of games, the forward will get a lot of chances to prove himself and secure a permanent transfer.
His injury history will be a cause of concern for the manager but a loan deal with an obligation to buy will work perfectly for Tottenham. This carries minimum risk and it won’t inflate the club’s wage bills either.
Will Chelsea agree to sell Christopher Nkunku to Tottenham Hotspur?
The two London clubs are bitter rivals so Chelsea will think long and hard before sending Nkunku to North London. However, in recent seasons there have been several transfers between London rivals, namely Arsenal and Chelsea so it won’t be a shock if Christopher Nkunku ends up playing in white next season.
The Blues will want to offload him permanently with an obligation to buy clause at the end of the loan deal but they can only push for that if the 27-year-old has multiple suitors.
If Spurs are the only major club wanting to sign Christopher Nkunku and the centre-forward is keen on joining them then Chelsea might have to agree to the current discussions.
