A survivor of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing was among those injured when a car drove into a large crowd of football fans in Liverpool on Monday, resulting in 47 people being hurt.

What started as a day of celebration in the city centre quickly descended into chaos when a car ploughed into a throng of fans revelling in Liverpool's Premier League trophy parade. The incident occurred just after 6pm on Water Street, where thousands had congregated to commemorate Liverpool FC's 20th league title – a landmark achievement for the club.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, attending to 20 individuals on site, while another 27 – including four children – were transported to hospitals throughout the city. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of shock and panic as the vehicle barrelled into the tightly packed crowd.

The parade was promptly halted and surrounding roads were sealed off as police initiated an investigation into the incident.

Police later confirmed the arrest of a "53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area". Among the crowd during Monday's parade was a fan who had survived the Manchester Arena attack in 2017, only to be hit by the car and knocked to the ground.

Frankie, 24, shared with the Mail: "I was at the Manchester Arena incident. I don't want to go out again. The side of the car went into me and I fell to the floor. It's all a blur. I've got cuts and bruises and I'll be fine but there's loads who have got more severe injuries."

Robby Potter, who was severely injured by shrapnel piercing his heart during the Manchester Arena bombing, attended the parade. The Liverpool supporter from Wirral described being "seconds" away from the turmoil, saying he was just ahead of the incident.

"I was 10 seconds in front. I'm shaking," he said. "I said areas away from the main parade could be targets. I said this in interviews."

Patrick Milligan, a 25 year old from Wigan, recounted the swift turn from celebration to chaos: "We all had the best day of our lives watching the parade and then it was like a tsunami within about five minutes of the parade finishing. It was horrific.

"The car just swerved into the crowd at speed and everyone was screaming. We now know our families are okay but at the time, I had no idea if my brothers or sisters were under the car. My Nan's 84 so we were all fearing the worst."

In the aftermath, three adults and a child were reportedly trapped under the vehicle, necessitating rescue by firefighters. Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police expressed her concern: "My thoughts are with all those injured in tonight's horrific incident. This had been a joyous day in Liverpool with hundreds of thousands of people lining the streets to celebrate Liverpool Football Club's parade. Sadly, at 6pm as the parade was drawing to a close, we received reports that a car was in collision with a number of pedestrians in Water Street."

Sims has stated the event was considered a one-off occurrence, and police are not on the hunt for any additional individuals related to the crash. "We believe this to be an isolated incident and are not currently looking for anyone else. The incident is not being treated as terrorism," she added.
