‘They’re going to suffer’: Gus Poyet weighs in on Leeds United’s survival chances in the Premier League

Leeds United will need a fairly large overhaul to compete in the Premier League next season.

This season in the top flight has shown the brutal reality of the newly promoted teams competing with the greats of England.

After having an astonishing season in the Championship, the three who came up looked miles off it.

Daniel Farke will hope to be the manager who breaks the wheel and use Leeds’ £100m+ budget to keep the Whites in the big time.

Well, with Leeds‘ ownership’s ambition in place, Gus Poyet, who has been a manager in a relegation battle, has offered some advice.

Gus Poyet weighs in on Leeds United’s Premier League survival chances

Of course, around Leeds, Poyet is known for his efforts as assistant manager for Dennis Wise during a troubling period for the Whites between 2006 and 2007.

Fans will be grateful for his work during this time, and the Uruguayan has gone on to have a decent managerial career.

His tenure at Sunderland springs to mind, as he himself had to fight relegation battles, which Leeds will get all too familiar with next season.

Poyet admires the Leeds fanbase and will hope nothing but the best for the club next season, so he’s taken the opportunity to offer some wise advice.

Speaking to Flashscore, Poyet talked about what the Whites must do if they have any chance of survival.

“With all respect, not only talking about Leeds, but all the teams, three or four that can perform at their best. It’s the other six, they are Premiership players,” Poyet said.

“But when you put these three or four players with players who never played in the Premiership, you’re going to suffer. And they’re going to suffer as well.

“Surviving in the Premier League means you recruit very well. And I’m not saying spending money. Fulham spent 100 million, and it went down.

“So it’s not about spending money, it’s about recruiting very well, and having a system of play that you can cope with the Premiership or most of the teams. So, you need to have something special.”

How much the relegated Premier League sides spent spells trouble for Leeds

With this considered, Farke might have in the back of his mind a feeling of change.

This surrounds his tactics, which worked so well in the Championship, and although they looked such a threat attacking-wise, defensively, you could pick out errors.

Troy Deeney thinks Burnley stay up for their defensive efforts, and Farke could choose to follow the ways of Scott Parker.

But Poyet is spot on after saying money isn’t everything, and this campaign has shown that to a tee through the relegated sides’ spending.

How much the three relegated sides spent in 24/25 summer transfer window

Leicester City – £80m

Southampton – £116.2m

Ipswich Town – £126.75m

This could raise alarm bells in the Leeds camp, but if the 49ers spend wisely, this problem may not ensue.

It’s not known what the exact strategy is, but Farke and co need to find the recipe for success quickly.
