Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has landed in Barcelona ahead of a few days of holidaying with his family following the culmination of the Premier League season. Villa number one Martinez was spotted at Barcelona airport on Monday, just hours after the final day defeat at Manchester United.
The campaign didn't end the way Martinez or Villa would've liked; the 2-0 reverse at Old Trafford cost the Villans another year in the Champions League next term, in a game which was laced with controversy surrounding the opening goal Morgan Rogers thought he'd scored, only for it to be pulled back by referee Thomas Bramall.
Martinez had been sent off in the first half when taking out Rasmus Hojlund after a back-pass from Matty Cash intended for the goalkeeper didn't actually reach him and he was deemed to have denied a goalscoring opportunity.
There has been plenty of speculation regarding the future of the 32-year-old, who has made 212 appearances for Villa since joining from Arsenal for £20m in the summer of 2020 and who has kept 70 clean sheets in all competitions in that time.
Martinez was visibly emotional as he left the pitch following the final home game of the season, which Villa won 2-0 against Tottenham Hotspur a little over a week ago. That was followed by rumours that he himself was the subject of interest from elsewhere, from around Europe but also from clubs in the Saudi Pro League.
The report in Spain, from Jijantes, adds that: "Dibu Martinez has arrived in Barcelona with his family to spend a few days off. Jorge Mendes, also in Barcelona, is advising the Aston Villa goalkeeper to find his next destination."
