Ruben Amorim says one Man Utd player is'so important'for next season, he cannot be sold

Manchester United are planning to overhaul the squad this summer, but Ruben Amorim will hope to keep a handful of certain players.

After the disastrous campaign that has just ended, few players are safe from the axe.

Manchester United were only good enough to finish 15th in the Premier League during the 2024-25 season, which is a low the club cannot repeat next year.

In order to change the fortunes of Ruben Amorim’s team, it has been expected that Ineos could end up letting as many as 13 players exit United, with three already confirmed.

This overhaul will include big names, with Alejandro Garnacho told to find a new club by Amorim already, and Rasmus Hojlund also expected to be up for sale after another disappointing campaign.

However, of all the names linked with an exit, Amorim will be desperate to avoid losing one player.

Ruben Amorim highlights the importance of Bruno Fernandes

This summer, almost every player will be for sale at Old Trafford, but there will be some exemptions, with Amorim having four irreplaceable names. This includes Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, and Leny Yoro.

All of which are pivotal, but there is concern around Al-Hilal’s rumoured £100m interest in Fernandes.

Selling the club captain would be a terrible move from Ineos, with his impact not easy to replicate. Now, Amorim has highlighted his importance during a press conference ahead of the post-season tour fixtures.

“The last game, the team was without pressure, they performed quite well, everybody wants the ball, the team has different moments, and in different moments, Bruno [Fernandes] takes responsibility. He’s really important for us and so important for what we want to build with this team.”

The way Fernandes has performed this season makes it clear he cannot be sold, as he embodies the club right now, and it could fall apart without him, as his numbers from SofaScore show.

If Fernandes did want to find a new challenge, few could blame him as the club has let him down, but if he stays, then next season could be a grand improvement.

Fernandes cannot be sold under any circumstances.

Amorim claims Manchester United are improving

The 2024-25 season was always going to be tough, but Amorim is already predicting big things for United’s future, which he has now reinforced during the press conference.

“Really tough season without trophies in the league. It’s a really big club that is alive and changes things…

“For some people, it’s hard to understand and see, but I think we are improving as a team. That lack of goals punishes us in some games.

“If I have to choose a positive, it’s that feeling in the stadium with the fans, and that’s the beginning of something.”

The lack of goals is United’s biggest problem, which looks to soon be solved by the additions of Matheus Cunha, and, potentially also Bryan Mbeumo, two significant upgrades. Signing players like this makes it imperative Fernandes is retained in order to create chances for them.
