The victims who were left seriously injured after a car crashed into a crowd of Liverpool fans yesterday evening remain ‘very ill in hospital’, the city’s mayor has said.
Dozens of people, including two children, were taken to hospital last night after the ‘horror’ incident in Water Street, where 800,000 fans had gathered to celebrate the Premier League team’s trophy parade.
In an update this morning, Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram said four members of the crowd were ‘very, very ill in hospital’.
‘We are hoping of course that they pull through very, very quickly,’ he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

The driver, a 53-year-old white British man, was arrested at the scene.

Merseyside Police said the ‘isolated’ incident was not being treated as terrorism.
The Prime Minister said he had spoken to Mr Rotheram about the incident, adding: ‘Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror.’

Jurgen Klopp and his family are ‘shocked and devastated’ by the collision at the end of the Liverpool FC’s victory parade, the club’s former manager said in a statement.
Klopp, who was at the celebrations in Liverpool yesterday, posted on Instagram: ‘My family and I are shocked and devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected.
‘You’ll never walk alone.’
The German is a club legend after winning a Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup in a nine year stint at Liverpool.

Liverpool MP says she has ‘no idea how that car got there’

Liverpool Riverside MP Kim Johnson has said the mood in the city has turned to ‘shock’ and ‘incredulity’ after a ‘fabulous weekend of celebration’.
She said: ‘Everything was going so well. This was almost the end of the parade.
‘The city council and emergency services have worked so hard to safeguard people coming to the victory parade. For this to happen the way it did, it’s shocking.’

Johnson urged people to let the police continue their investigations, while criticising mis-information about the incident online.
She added: ‘All of the myths and all the lies that are being peddled on social media now by the far-right to say it was a suspected terror attack – the police are saying that is definitely not the case.
‘I’ve no idea how that car got there. Liverpool City Council and our emergency services are well versed in terms of supporting these types of large events and safeguarding the public with these types of events.’

A Liverpool fan from Northern Ireland who was struck by the car at the victory parade has left hospital.
Jack Trotter, from Newtownards, County Down, told BBC News NI he was in ‘absolute agony’ last night.
He and his girlfriend Abbie Gallagher were both hit by the vehicle as it rammed into the dense crowd on Water Street.
The football fan wrote on social media: ‘I’m writing this because I’ve got a million texts asking if I’m okay and it’s crazy over here. I’ve barely any service.
‘The parade was going unreal until the very end. Unfortunately I was hit. I’m extremely lucky as I dodged the car just in time; however, I still got hit.
‘In absolute shock how an event like this can turn to such a tragedy.’

Police officers had to push back crowds from lunging into a police van after a car hit crowds in Liverpool
A video from the scene appears to show how angry fans responded after a white British man, 53, was detained at the scene.
Officers pushed back men shouting and approaching the van before slamming the door shut.

Atomic Kitten star ‘horrified’ after family members narrowly avoid parade crash

Atomic Kitten singer Natasha Hamilton has revealed how her father and nephew were almost caught up in the Liverpool car crash.
Sharing a picture of the two of them wearing Liverpool shirts on Instagram, she wrote: ‘My dad and nephew were in Liverpool today at the celebration parade.
‘Then I saw a video of what happened and my heart sank. Thankfully they’re both safe but I’m absolutely horrified at what I saw today and my thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.’

Kemi Badenoch sickened at injured children in parade crash

The Conservative Party leader has said she is sickened at how many children were injured in last night’s Liverpool parade crash.
Kemi Badenoch posted on X this morning: ‘It is sickening to hear how many children are among the injured.
‘It doesn’t matter if this is or isn’t classed as a terrorist incident, it’s still a heinous crime.
‘Those who target joyful celebrations and our happiest moments, who care not for the welfare of little children are beneath contempt.
‘A stark contrast to the people of Liverpool who responded with extraordinary compassion, offering lifts, shelter, food, and more.’
Merseyside Police said four children were among the injured, including one of the two left seriously injured.

Four people injured in crash still ‘very ill in hospital’

Liverpool’s mayor Steve Rotheram has said that four people injured in yesterday’s crash remain ‘very, very ill in hospital’.
‘We are hoping of course that they pull through,’ he told BBC Radio 5 Live.
North West Ambulance Service said last night that 27 people were taken to hospital after the crash.
They said that two people, including one child, were seriously injured.
Asked whether his words reflected an increase of that number of seriously injured, Rotheram added: ‘No, not directly, but of course we’re in liaison with the police and with the ambulance services.’

MPs express ‘devastation’ at ‘awful’ Liverpool scenes

Members of Parliament from across the country have reacted in horror at the crash in Liverpool last night.
Labour’s Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson paid tribute to the work of emergency services last night.
The Houghton and Sunderland South MP told Sky News: ‘These were utterly tragic scenes. As the Prime Minister said, we were all shocked by what we saw.
‘I want to start by paying tribute to the emergency services for their phenomenal response on the ground and also to send my thoughts to all of those affected by what’s taken place.’
The Green Party’s co-leader Adrian Ramsey said on X this morning: ‘It’s truly awful to see how scenes of joy were turned to devastation last night in Liverpool.
‘My heart goes out to the city and the fans of Liverpool FC’.
Emma Lewell, the MP for South Shields, sent her prayers to Liverpool.
She posted on X this morning: ‘Just awful news. A gorgeous city filled with the kindest of people.’

‘No new details’ on police investigation says Liverpool mayor

Liverpool City Region’s Mayor has said the end to yesterday’s parade overshadowed the absolute joy of the day’s celebrations.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Steve Rotheram said there was ‘no new details’ from Merseyside Police’s ongoing investigation into what happened.
He added that ‘detailed work’ was taking place as to how a car was able to enter a closed street at such speed.
Rotheram expressed his sympathy to all those injured during the crash.
He said: ‘Our thoughts really should be with the people who are in hospital at the moment’.

Almost a million Liverpool FC supporters had been lining the streets to celebrate their team’s success in the Premier League.

Liverpool is waking up to aftermath of a tragedy in the heart of the city.
Walter Street, where the incident took place, remaines closed off as police continue their investigations.
Debris remains scattered across the street and police tents line the road.

Here is everything we know about what happened yesterday.
Around 50 people were injured after a car ploughed into crowds of Liverpool fans during the team’s Premier League victory parade.
Merseyside Police first received reports just after 6pm that a car had collided with ‘a number of pedestrians’ on Water Street.
Just before 8pm, the police said the driver had been arrested.
North West Ambulance Service said 27 people were taken to the hospital and 20 people were treated at the scene.
Two of those taken to hospital, including a child, suffered serious injuries.
Dramatic footage captured the scenes of panic and chaos as fans fled the area after the incident.

Liam Robinson, the leader of the city council, closed the conference by saying the incident ‘cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day for the city and the finale to a fabulous bank holiday weekend’.
He urged people not to share the ‘horrifying’ footage of the incident on social media, adding that council officials are working with the police.
Robinson added: ‘Once again, our hearts go out to all of those affected.
‘Liverpool is a city that has a proud history of coming together and supporting each other during challenging times.

Child and three adults were pinned under a car during incident

Four people, including a child, were lifted from beneath the car that ploughed into crowds in Liverpool city centre, chief fire officer for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service Nick Searle said.
‘We immediately mobilised three fire engines to Water Street and were in attendance in four minutes,’ he told reporters.
‘On arrival, the crews were met with numerous injured… and four persons trapped under a vehicle.
‘Our crews rapidly lifted the vehicle, removed three adults and one child from beneath and passed them to our ambulance service colleagues.
‘We then worked with emergency service partners to ensure casualties received medical treatment and transport to hospital as quickly as possible.’
Searle stressed that there will be a ‘visible and reassuring’ number of fire officers on patrol for the next few weeks.

Man arrested at the scene believed to be the driver

A 53-year-old man arrested after a car ploughed into a crowd of people during Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade is believed to be its driver, Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said.
Sims added: ‘Extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision, and it is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media.
‘I know that people will understandably be concerned by what has happened tonight.
‘What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. The incident is not being treated as terrorism.’
