Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has indicated that the club may have a relatively quiet window this summer due to financial constraints.
Coming off the back of a wretched season which saw them finish 15th in the Premier League with 42 points from 38 matches and lose the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, United will head into next season with no continental football for the first time in a decade.
Unsurprisingly, this is set to have huge financial ramifications due to the Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules, and Amorim is expecting limited transfer business at Old Trafford this summer as a result.
“Without the Champions League, we don’t need a big squad; we can control the squad in a better way,” Amorim told reporters (h/t Daily Mail).
“We have a plan that is to bring in some new players, of course, but our big plan is to improve the team that we have, which is to improve our academy.
“That is the future, is not going to change so much because we have the FFP rules, we are not allowed to do much this summer.”
Despite Amorim’s comments, United are closing in on their first acquisition of the summer market, with Matheus Cunha close to joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £62.5 million deal.
The Red Devils are reportedly still keen on further offensive reinforcement and have made an enquiry for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo off the back of a splendid 20-goal season, while Lyon youngster Rayan Cherki also remains of interest.
