The Blackpool Tower was illuminated in the colours of Liverpool FC last night as people from all over the country expressed their support for the city in the wake of a horror crash at the club's victory parade.
Everton FC, Manchester United and Port Vale supporters were among those joining in a flood of support for their fellow football fans after a car was driven into crowds following the Liverpool FC Premier League victory parade yesterday.
Merseyside Police were called to the scene just after 6pm on Monday, May 26, after receiving reports that a car had hit a number of people on Water Street in the city centre.
Four children were among 47 people injured in the incident. 27 people were taken to hospital, and two people - one adult and one child - were said to have suffered serious injuries.
A 53-year-old white British man has been arrested and is believed to be the driver of the vehicle, Merseyside Police said. The incident is not being treated as terrorism.
After lighting up the famous Blackpool Tower bright red last night as a sign of respect, a spokesman said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Liverpool. No matter what your colours we stand in solidarity with everyone effected by this awful event."
Mollie James said: "Currently in Blackpool and must say the tower in red was incredible to witness. The support coming from people is mega (myself included). YNWA."
Elaine Walker said: "I'm a Manchester red but my thoughts and prayers are with Merseyside. Hopefully no one is badly hurt. Sending prayers." Carol A Davies said: "I'm a Manchester red hoping everyone is OK, prayers."
Ruth AC said: "Thinking of the Liverpool fans, what an awful end to a wonderful season you have had, from a Vale fan. Sending prayers that no one is badly hurt."
Emma Louise Grundy said: "City fan here and this is awful celebrating their win of the cup. I send love and strength to Liverpool."
Hayley Hughes said: "Everton supporter. This should never of happened anywhere in any city I’m disgusted with what has happened today thinking of all of my home town with this tragic news." Hayley Anne Maxwell said: "From an Everton supporter sending love."
A huge police presence and cordon remained at the scene this morning. The cordon started from the junction of Temple Street and Dale Street and was in place to the bottom of Water Street.
Roads leading to Dale Street such as Eberle Street, Hackins Hey and part of Exchange Flags were also blocked off by police. This was also the situation for roads leading to Water Street.
A huge cordon remained at the top of Castle Street outside the town hall, with several police officers guarding the scene. People travelling to work were told to find alternative routes and officers said it was unclear when the roads would reopen. The Strand remains open for cars and pedestrians.
Due to the closure on Dale Street all Arriva North West and Stagecoach cross-river services are currently terminating at Whitechapel. The journeys will resume journeys at Sir Thomas Street, omitting Cook Street.
