Roy Keane sets record straight as Aston Villa complain to Pgmol about referee who 'cost them'…

It was high drama on Sunday as the Premier League wrapped up. Despite Newcastle United's final-day defeat to Everton, results elsewhere meant the Magpies still managed to sneak into the Champions League on goal difference.

The key result was Manchester United's victory over Aston Villa, a result that nobody would have predicted before the game, surely.

That game was not without controversy, though, as Morgan Rogers had a goal disallowed that really should have stood, but the referee blew his whistle before Rogers put the ball in the net, which meant VAR couldn't get involved and the decision had to stand.

Man United would go on to win 2-0, and Aston Villa had already had Emi Martinez sent off, so really, it's a moot point, but Villa don't see it that way.

This was the moment that cost Aston Villa the game on Sunday, not the disallowed goal

Roy Keane says Newcastle United earned the right to finish fifth this season

Aston Villa believe the decision cost them the win and a place in next season's Champions League, but as former Aston Villa assistant manager Roy Keane pointed out on Sky Sports (h/t The Chronicle), there were 37 other games this season, and Newcastle United earned their place.

"The table doesn't lie. Over the course of the season, they have earned that right.

"They deserve it. A little bit of luck with the goal going against Villa, but you can't begrudge them that little bit of success.

"They have had injury problems like everybody else. They mentioned they need players - every club will be saying that at the end of the season. But the table has taken care of itself and they have just about deserved it.

"The way he's [Eddie Howe] managed it, the recruitment side of it, his hands have been tied a little bit. He was not well a few months ago.

"He's had a lot of challenges like lots of managers out there. It's been a bit of a rollercoaster, but his temperament for that job suits him down to the ground.

"He never seems to get too high or too low. The results have been fantastic. He has done an amazing job up there."

Aston Villa will have a good chance of winning the Europa League next season

We're not sure what world we're living in when Roy Keane is defending Newcastle United, but we're okay with it. I guess it's the same world in which Newcastle fans are thanking Manchester United.

I dare say it wouldn't take long to find one or two bad decisions that benefited Aston Villa this season. It all balances out eventually, so it is what it is.

At the end of the day, Villa will have a good crack at the Europa League next season, and with Unai Emery at the helm, they'll probably win it.
