Speculation is mounting over the identity of the driver who ploughed into crowds at Liverpool FC's victory parade.

Harrowing footage circulating on social media shows the moments before and after the horror incident where dozens of fans were mowed down by a car in terrifying scenes.

But some people have suggested images of a man being restrained by police do not resemble images of the alleged driver - who they claim appears to be younger and wearing different clothes.

As slowed down footage of the driver's door being opened appeared online, one person said: "That man doesn't look like he's 53... Are they covering this up already?"

One X user wrote: "Let's cut the crap, this driver doesn't look 53 to me."

Another added: "Wait until it's revealed that the 53-year-old white British man from Liverpool who has been arrested 'following the incident' isn't the driver. I can feel it coming."

Another added: "Everyone's assuming the 53-year-old who has been arrested is the driver. Merseyside Police haven't confirmed why the 53-year-old was arrested. Urgent clarity is required about how many arrests have been made and for what crimes."

But after the Daily Star put these theories to the force, a Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "The man arrested, who we believe to be the driver, is 53."

Jubilation turned to horror yesterday when fans celebrating their team's historic Premier League win were struck by a people carrier on Water Street near the Liver Building.

Four children were among the 27 people taken to hospital after the incident, which left some trapped beneath the vehicle.

Two people, including one child sustained serious injuries while 20 others were treated at the scene for minor wounds.

In an earlier statement, police said: "We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.

"We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area. Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision."

In a press conference on Monday evening, Merseyside Police confirmed the incident is being treated as isolated and is not believed to be terror-related.

Assistant Chief Constable Sims said: “What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it.”
