From Spain: Liverpool make contact to sign 'unbelievable' forward alongside Wirtz

Liverpool have sounded out Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez over a potential summer move to Anfield, according to Marca.

The Reds clinched their 20th Premier League title, finishing the season 10 points clear of their nearest rivals Arsenal, and have already moved to strengthen their squad by advancing on deals for Bayer Leverkusen duo Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz.

But a new number nine is believed to be among the club's top priorities for the summer transfer window and Argentina international Alvarez is believed to be a target.

After a mega money move from Manchester City to the Wanda Metropolitano last summer, Alvarez netted a staggering 29 goals and registered seven assists in 54 appearances across all competitions.

That form, plus the fact he has Premier League experience from his time at the Etihad Stadium, has made Liverpool consider the World Cup winner for their number nine position, with contact made about a potential switch to Anfield.

However, according to the report from Marca, Alvarez would prefer to stay at Atletico after a fine season where he has emerged as a key player in Diego Simeone's plans and one of La Liga's star players.

Described as "unbelievable" by Pep Guardiola, Alvarez currently earns around £260,000-a-week in Spain, and it's believed that Liverpool would be willing to offer him a potential pay-rise to get a deal over the line.

Arsenal and Barcelona are also showing an interest in the 25-year-old, but it seems as though a move away from Atletico Madrid is unlikely as things currently stand in this window.

Atletico Madrid are looking to strengthen their own attack this summer though, and have shown an interest in Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez as an option.

The Reds are close to sealing deals for Frimpong and Wirtz as previously mentioned, while negotiations are also ongoing with Bournemouth for left-back Milos Kerkez too. Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott and Jarrell Quansah are all expected to be subject to transfer interest too, which could see more arrivals.
