An eyewitness has recounted the horror moment that a vehicle rammed into swarms of Liverpool fans on Monday's victory parade, claiming the driver looked "agitated".

Harry Rashid was caught up in the chaos and said he was "worried" for his life when the vehicle suddnely mounted the pavement on Water Street in front of horrifued onlookers.

Harry managed to escape unscathed. However dozens of others, including four children, were injured in the chaos reports the Mirror.

According to reports, up to a million Liverpool supporters had lined the streets to celebrate the Reds' latest triumph, with many following the open-top bus as it wound itself through a 10-mile route from Allerton Maze to the city centre.

Witnesses say the driver was beeping as the car moved at "a decent speed" along Water Street. The car then mounted as spectators frantically ran out of the way.

Speaking about the driver, Harry told BBC Radio 5 Live: “He looked kind of emotional, agitated, I don’t know why. His hands were moving about. He was trying to close the door of the car, I think, because they’ve tried to pull the door open and then he was trying to close it.”

He added: “Absolutely I was scared, I’m a human being. You worry for your life don’t you?” The parade travelled on a 10-mile route over three-and-a-half hours ending with a finale on the Strand in the city centre.

Tragically, the celebration came to an abrupt end as chaos transpired on Water Street, about one mile before the event's endpoint.

Another witness, named Chelsea, said she jumped out of the way of the car during the incident. She said: “We heard beeping and screaming and as we looked up the car was coming directly for us and for everybody else and we just jumped, I grabbed my friend to jump out the way and she grabbed her daughter, and it just skimmed us.

“It must’ve been going about 30mph and then we were just in shock that we just nearly got run over but we didn’t really know the gravity of it at that point and we were just in shock, then we saw everybody chasing the car afterwards with all the windows smashed.”

She added: “All of a sudden you just saw people lying on the floor and several police officers running towards the scene.”

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims, based at Merseyside Police, issued a statement following the crash last night. She said: "Sadly, at just after 6 o’clock this evening, as the parade was drawing to a close, we received reports that a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street in Liverpool city centre.

"A number of people have been injured and were taken to hospital. In addition a large number of people of all ages were treated at the scene but did not require hospital treatment."

She added: "The car stopped at the scene and a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested. We believe him to be the driver of the vehicle. What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it. The incident is not currently being treated as terrorism."
