Matt Doherty has a defiant message for Wolves supporters after 'very tough' season

Matt Doherty has taken to social media to reflect on what has been an up-and-down campaign for Wolves.

Having re-joined Wolves in 2023 at the age of 31 years old, many may have expected the Irishman to play a bit part role in his return to Molineux – that, however, hasn’t been the case.

Previously a flying wing-back, Doherty has reinvented himself as a right-centre back under Vitor Pereira, becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet in the Portuguese’s three at the back system.

Doherty is clearly loving life under Pereira and is seemingly hoping to carry that good feeling into the new season.

Matt Doherty sends message to Wolves supporters

Gary Lineker anticipated a tough season for Wolves, and the former BBC presenter was bang on in his prediction.

When reflecting on Wolves’ campaign, it seems like Doherty agrees with Lineker’s pre-season claims in his latest Instagram post.

“Thank you to all Wolves fans home and away for your support this season even when it must of been difficult.

“A very tough season with tonnes to improve on before we return. A lot to do in the off season and pre season to get this club ready to compete at a high level in Premier League next season.

Doherty could be front-runner for Wolves captaincy

Nelson Semedo’s expected departure means that Pereira will soon have to select Wolves’ next captain.

With over 300 club appearances to his name, Doherty could be seen as a viable candidate for the job.

If experience is what Pereira is looking for, Doherty could be the perfect choice, but if the Portuguese is looking for a slightly younger option, Joao Gomes may be the ideal pick.

Gomes’ leadership has been hailed by his teammates, and at just 24 years old, he could be seen as a Wolves captain for years to come.
