Former Wrexham, Newcastle United, Northampton Town and Cheltenham Town defender Ben Tozer…

Title-winning former Cheltenham Town captain Ben Tozer has announced his retirement from football at the age of 35.

It marks the end of a career that took him from hometown club Plymouth Argyle to Newcastle United, via Swindon Town.

He then went on to represent Northampton Town, Yeovil Town and Newport County AFC, before joining Cheltenham in the summer of 2018.

After initially struggling to make an impact in midfield, he was switched to the middle of Michael Duff's back three and went on to inspire the team to promotion to League One in 2020/21, after an unsuccessful play-off tilt the previous season.

He was named Supporters' Player of the Year in both 2019/20 and 2020/21.

Tozer left Cheltenham for Wrexham early on in the 2021/22 campaign for £200,000, helping the Welsh club secure a return to the EFL and then to League One with back-to-back promotions under boss Phil Parkinson.

He then returned to Gloucestershire with Forest Green Rovers last summer, making 34 appearances for Steve Cotterill's side, who were beaten by Southend United on penalties in the National League play-off semi-finals.
