Virgil van Dijk sends emotional message after Liverpool parade crash - 'We are all with you'

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has penned an emotional message on social media after the horror incident during the club's trophy parade.

The Dutchman had taken to Instagram, penning a message to fans while writing: "My thought and prayers are with everyone affected. Praying for a speedy recovery for everyone who suffered injuries. We are all with you," while posting an image of the Royal Liver Building with red smoke from the parade on Monday.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested after a car hit a number of pedestrians in the city centre during the Premier League title celebrations on Monday. The incident is not being treated as terrorism.

Van Dijk's post comes after former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also expressed his support on social media.

He wrote: "My family and I are shocked and devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected. You'll never walk alone."

Merseyside Police and the ambulance service confirmed in a press conference that 47 people were injured, 27 of whom had been taken to hospital with two, including one child, seriously injured.

Merseyside Police released an initial statement saying: "We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city center. We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Mon 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male detained."

United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling. My thoughts are with all those injured or affected.

"I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident. I'm being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate."

Steven Gerrard had said he was "shocked, sickened and saddened" by Monday's events

The horrific incident had occurred just minutes after Liverpool had finished their open-top bus parade with the Premier League trophy, with the players having further plans to celebrate throughout the week.

However, those plans have now been cancelled, the club has confirmed.

A number of staff at the club were due to hold an event on Tuesday to celebrate the football team's incredible achievements this season, but late Monday evening, all plans to do so were scrapped.

An email obtained by BBC News had seen the club state that they “will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities” and encouraged staff “to come together at this time to support each other”.
