Newcastle United have confirmed that Paul Mitchell will leave his role at the club by mutual consent.

Former Tottenham Hotspur head of recruitment Paul Mitchell has quit his role at Newcastle United after less than a year in a bombshell announcement made by the club on Tuesday lunchtime.

The Magpies secured Champions League football for next season on the final day of the top flight campaign despite being beaten by Everton at St James’ Park. Mitchell was appointed as the club’s sporting director in July 2024 after time at AS Monaco.

News of Mitchell’s departure from the Tyneside outfit comes as a bombshell decision after such a short stint with the club. A Newcastle United statement read: “Paul Mitchell, Newcastle United’s Sporting Director, will leave the club by mutual consent at the end of June 2025. Paul joined the club in July 2024, reuniting him with Magpies CEO Darren Eales, who had previously recruited Paul to Tottenham Hotspur in 2014. Due to health reasons, Darren will be stepping down as CEO in the near future.

“During Paul’s tenure as Sporting Director, the club won its first major domestic trophy in 70 years by lifting the Carabao Cup in March 2025 and has secured Champions League football for the 2025/26 campaign.”

Paul Mitchell to leave Newcastle United

Mitchell said: "I'd like to thank everyone at Newcastle United for their support over the last year, including Eddie Howe, Becky Langley, the players, staff, owners and fans. It has been an honour to be part of the club and to work with some incredible people.

"I'm leaving at a time that is right for me and the club, particularly with Darren Eales - someone who I have worked so closely with in my career - moving on soon. The club is in great hands on and off the pitch, and is in a fantastic position to continue building. I'd like to wish everyone connected with Newcastle United a bright and successful future."

Mitchell enjoyed a prolific stint as head of recruitment at Tottenham Hotspur, arriving at the club to work alongside Mauricio Pochettino again in 2012. Mitchell had previously been at Southampton and MK Dons.

Former Spurs head of recruitment signed Son Heung-min and Dele Alli

During his time in North London, Mitchell helped to sign several high profile first team stars including Son Heung-min, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld. His departure form Southampton came under some controversy with former Saints manager Ronald Koeman saying: "Maybe Spurs felt they couldn't buy our football players so they had to bring in other people. It's a compliment for Southampton, maybe they need the same structure that we have.

"It will effect everybody as it is an important role at the club. It's a challenge for Paul, he wanted to move and we have to respect that. Southampton is not dependant on one person; Southampton will march on.”

It was announced that Mitchell would leave Spurs in August 2016 and a notice period began. The recruitment chief was then put on gardening leave in March 2017 after serving six months of that 16-month period. The Daily Mail claimed that Mitchell ‘fell out’ with Daniel Levy at Tottenham Hotspur and that the two ‘clashed’.
