Birmingham City transfer target Kwame Poku could yet complete a move straight to the Premier League this summer following Sunderland's promotion from the Championship via the play-offs this past weekend.
Winger Poku is leaving Peterborough United this summer upon the expiry of his contract and, for Posh, the more clubs interested in his services the better as they prepare for a tribunal which will determine the fee they receive for the youngster because he remains under 24 until August - by which point the season will have begun and Poku will have a new club.
That will depend on him moving to another English club, however, and with both Celtic and Rangers also linked with moves for Poku, there is the chance Posh miss out on banking a substantial sum and are made to settle for a set compensation fee for cross-border deals - even within the UK.
The former Colchester United attacker, who scored against Blues at London Road as Chris Davies' men secured promotion back to the second tier last month, has a host of clubs on his tail, according to Peterborough's director of football Barry Fry.
"The last time I heard, there were 26 clubs in for him," he said, as quoted by Give Me Sport. "I’m not surprised. The kid has what it takes to reach the Premier League. We have developed him over the past four years to the point where he is ready to take the next step in his career."
The report claims Blues made an offer to Poku, who scored 30 goals in 147 appearances for Peterborough, and his representatives over the weekend, but now it remains a waiting game to see whether the attacker will be tempted to St Andrew's ahead of their Championship assault which commences later this summer.
Sunderland, though, could make a more attractive offer having seen off Sheffield United in dramatic circumstances at Wembley on Saturday, when Tommy Watson - who himself is leaving the Stadium of Light for Brighton - netted a stoppage time winner to make it 2-1 and send the Black Cats back to the top flight for the first time since 2017.
