Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell will no longer be working together at Newcastle United.
In a season that saw Eddie Howe cement his legacy as a Newcastle United legend, Paul Mitchell is on his way out.
It has been confirmed that Paul Mitchell is leaving Newcastle United by mutual consent at the end of June, less than 12 months after his arrival at St James’ Park.
He came in last year as Dan Ashworth’s replacement. At the time, he looked like a smart appointment due to his reputation regarding recruitment.
But what followed were two transfer windows that saw Mitchell unable to invest due to PSR, as well as a tense relationship between himself and Eddie Howe.

What happened when Newcastle United appointed Paul Mitchell
That relationship was so tense that it almost resulted in a huge departure.
According to the Telegraph, Eddie Howe briefly considered quitting his job as Newcastle United manager following Mitchell’s appointment.
The Telegraph state that Howe was not consulted about him possibly arriving, and only discovered that Mitchell was getting the job 24 hours before it was announced.

He was not happy about seemingly losing his power over the club’s recruitment, and had been given no reassurance from the Newcastle United owners.
Who Newcastle United tried to appoint before Paul Mitchell
Appointing Dan Ashworth’s successor at St James’ Park became a bit of a saga.
Landing Mitchell looked like good business, and a deal for him came out of nowhere – to the fans and Howe.
Before he was named as Newcastle’s sporting director, it was Dougie Freedman who came closest to arriving.
Newcastle made a move for Freedman, as they aimed to tempt him away from Crystal Palace.
However, Freedman rejected Newcastle’s approach and remained at Selhurst Park.
More than a month later, it was Paul Mitchell getting the job that Newcastle had offered to Freedman.
Fast forward to the summer of 2025 and Mitchell is on his way out of St James’ Park, while Freedman has left Crystal Palace. The 51-year-old is working for Al-Diriyah in Saudi Arabia, who are owned by PIF.
In terms of replacing Mitchell, some Newcastle fans want Steve Nickson to get the job.
