Manchester City and Man Utd could both be in the market for the same player this summer.

Manchester City and Manchester United could do battle in the summer transfer window as they both look to add attacking talent to their squads. Pep Guardiola and Ruben Amorim will both hope to overhaul their respective midfields this summer as they look to recover from poor campaigns.

It is understood City want to add as many as five signings to their squad this summer and have already targeted a goalkeeper, a full-back and at least two midfielders. The Blues could end up with three new midfield signings amid interest in Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White and AC Milan star Tijjani Reijnders.

It is a similar situation across Manchester, where United want to add two attacking midfielders and a striker to their squad this summer. A deal for Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha is believed to be close to completion while United also want to sign Brentford playmaker Bryan Mbeumo and Ipswich striker Liam Delap.

Man City interested in Rayan Cherki deal

Manchester City and Manchester United both want to add attacking midfielders to their squad this summer, which could lead them to compete for the same players. One of those is Lyon ace Rayan Cherki, who has been linked with a potential move to both Manchester clubs already.

Last week, Sky Germany reporter Patrick Berger claimed United have a 'strong interest' in the 21-year-old and have already held talks with Lyon over his potential transfer. "Manchester United have a strong interest in signing Rayan Cherki and are competing with Borussia Dortmund," he wrote just before the Europa League final. "#MUFC reps held talks with Lyon when they met in the Europa League. The result of today’s final may play a role in Cherki’s decision."

There has now been another development in the Cherki transfer saga after transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed he was on City's shortlist for the summer window. "Manchester City are interested in Rayan Cherki and informed on exit costs details," he wrote online. "He’s on the shortlist with Morgan Gibbs-White also still there, two names highly rated at Man City."

Cherki has been one of the standout attacking talents in Europe over the past season, netting 12 goals and notching 20 assists for Olympique Lyonnais across all competitions. The France international also shone against United in the Europa League, where he scored in both legs as they fell to a dramatic 7-6 defeat on aggregate at the quarter-final stage.
