Manchester United are preparing themselves for a transfer windfall as Benfica's Alvaro Carreras reportedly prepares to complete a move to Real Madrid this summer.

Despite arriving from Los Blancos' academy as a teenager, Carreras struggled to break into the United first-team during his time in Manchester.

The full-back would be loaned to Preston North End, a la David Beckham, and Granada but did not manage to convince Erik ten Hag that he could make it at Old Trafford.

Benfica did spot his promise though and would sign him on loan in January 2024 before making his stay permanent the following summer.

In his first full season in Portugal, the 22-year-old has made a big impact, racking up 50 appearances for the Lisbon club and catching the eye of plenty of admirers.

The leading team chasing Carreras is Real, who are making quick moves to improve their full-back positions this summer. Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to join them at the end of his contract on Merseyside.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Madrid club have already confirmed a wage with Carreras for his contract at the Bernabeu with an 'agreement' reached and now discussions have begun this week with Benfica over the transfer fee. This is where United will be interested.

MEN Sport understands that United hold a 'significant sell-on clause' for Carreras which was agreed when the player moved to Benfica permanently last summer.

It is looking likely at this moment that United could get a share of the £42 million Real will need to pay to activate the full-back's release clause.

Normally, these sell-on clauses are proportions of the profit made by the selling club on the player.

Benfica paid just £5m for Carreras so if the sell-on clause is priced at 10 per cent, United could bag themselves around £3.7m from this deal.
