Newcastle chief to make shock exit ahead of transfer window in surprise shake-up

Paul Mitchell, Newcastle's sporting director, is set to depart from St. James' Park this summer, cutting his tenure with the Magpies short. Having joined less than a year ago, Mitchell's departure comes amid news that CEO Darren Eales is also expected to leave soon due to health reasons.

In parting, Mitchell expressed gratitude for his time with the club.

In his farewell statement, he said: "I'd like to thank everyone at Newcastle United for their support over the last year, including Eddie Howe, Becky Langley, the players, staff, owners and fans. It has been an honour to be part of the club and to work with some incredible people."

Additionally, he noted the synchronicity with Eales' imminent exit: "I'm leaving at a time that is right for me and the club, particularly with Darren Eales - someone who I have worked so closely with in my career - moving on soon."

He praised the club's current state: "The club is in great hands on and off the pitch, and is in a fantastic position to continue building."

Mitchell concluded with a hopeful note: "I'd like to wish everyone connected with Newcastle United a bright and successful future."

Newcastle's recent triumphs, including a Carabao Cup win—their first major trophy in 70 years—and another Champions League qualification, accentuate the positive trajectory that Mitchell leaves behind. He filled the role previously held by Dan Ashworth, whose attention from Manchester United led to his move from his positions with the FA and Brighton.

Mitchell has an impressive CV, having previously worked at AS Monaco, Tottenham, Southampton and RB Leipzig. Newcastle are bracing themselves for a hectic summer transfer window, but they look set to retain their sought-after forward, Alexander Isak, following their qualification for the Champions League.

The Magpies are also eyeing Ipswich Town's Liam Delap as they aim to bolster Eddie Howe's squad after another successful season.
