No Manchester United player will be considered unsellable during the summer transfer window, as the club commit to rebuilding the squad for Ruben Amorim.
All of United's players have reportedly been told that the club will not guarantee their future at Old Trafford if offers come in for them - but some fans in the Manchester Evening News comments section say that it would be a "grave mistake" to get rid of one of the more obvious candidates that have come forward in recent weeks. Alejandro Garnacho, who broke through to the first team in 2022 and has made nearly 150 appearances for the club, is included in the list of players available for the right price this summer after being relegated to substitute status in the Europa League final.
He appears to have fallen out of favour with Amorim right at the end of the season, despite being considered as one of the "unsellables" just last year. Speaking after the Europa League final, he complained: "Up until the final I played every round helping the team and today I play 20 minutes, I don't know."
Garnacho could be especially vulnerable as his sale would represent "pure profit" with regards to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules, previously known as Financial Fair Play (FFP), a reason which has seen many talented academy graduates leave teams across the league. However, United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has previously said that no player would be sold purely for financial reasons.
Some fans are against the idea of selling Garnacho to fund a rebuild, and reckon he's worth persisting with. Reader Clyde73 says: "The Garnacho situation highlights Amorim lack of man management skills, you can draw a comparison with Fergie and Ronaldo in his early years and his 'free spirit' play but Fergie moulded him into a world class player. Garnacho is the raw product but needs an arm around his shoulder and guidance, as Fergie did. Ruben has a lot to learn."
Ghostdad says: "OK Garnacho has had a bit of a strop, yes he misses the easy chances and makes poor decisions of when he should pass, but he is a very young player that has been playing for a team in turmoil due to inept management everywhere in the club, apart from the academy. It is not just the players who are culpable and it is time for Ratcliffe and co. to fess up and admit their mismanagement since arriving at the club. They set the standards of the club and they are found wanting for sure."
Jolus adds: "I am sure that I would be voicing the feelings of the Manchester United supporters if talented youngster Alejandro Garnacho is put up for sale after a not so brilliant season - the one just ended. We all remember his exploits in the preceding one when his performances tagged him as not for sale. Transferring him woud be a grave mistake. Watching him play and most probably excelling with another team would be sad."
Others would support a move away, for a variety of reasons. RedIsRed writes: "FFP still lurks in the background so prudence will be required. Persevering with Shaw, Dalot and Dorgu will mean clean sheets will be rare. The knock-on from this means we must get in a striker and replace Garnacho. We have to be able to outscore our errors. Defences have to be made wary of our attack. That will cost money but it is a necessity. Mainoo and Garnacho may need to leave so others about to emerge can stay."
Garth123 thinks the writing is already on the wall: "For starters I think Matheus Cunha from Wolves is a smart bit of business. He will fit in the 3-4-3 system that Amorim wishes to persevere with. He will replace Garnacho and will take the no.10 jersey which will block any way back for Marcus Rashford. I like Garnacho and will miss him but I can see how he struggles within Amorim's system and so I get it."
BayBoy says: "The place for any player to do his talking is on the pitch, Garnacho has maybe one good game in four, pretty clear that if Cunha signs he will be taking Garnacho's spot in the team, and Garnacho don't have the temperament to develop his physical and cognitive abilities from the bench."
Have your say! Is it time for Garnacho to leave? Do you worry that he will excel elsewhere, like other recent departures? Comment below, and join in on the conversation.
