Ruben Amorim acknowledged that part of the "big plan" to improve Manchester United includes the club's academy.

During a press conference on Tuesday, the United head coach conceded that the club "are not allowed to do much" in the summer transfer window, citing Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. "We have a plan that is to bring some new players, of course," Amorim said.

"But our big plan is to improve the team that we have, is to improve our academy, because I think that is the future. It was the past, so can be the future.

"It's not going to change so much because we have the financial fair play rules. We are not allowed to do much in this summer, even with Champions League, so we are prepared for that."

Amorim also stated that they "don't need a big squad" and "can control the squad in a better way" without being in the Champions League or any UEFA competitions next season. He even acknowledged the absence of European games "is a good thing for us to take advantage".

The situation could also prove advantageous for several academy players. Below are some who could stand to benefit over the coming months.

After making the senior matchday squad half a dozen times since Amorim's arrival without appearing on the pitch, Kukonki, as a left-footed central defender capable of playing out wide, should have an opportunity to replace the departing Jonny Evans.

Another who has made the first-team bench but is still awaiting his debut is Moorhouse. United want to sign a new midfielder, but next season Amorim could afford the local lad an opportunity to impress, nevertheless. (Image: Manchester United via Getty Imag) 2 of 8

Much like Moorhouse, fellow midfielder Thwaites will be eyeing a first-team breakthrough next season after excelling for the under-18s this term, displaying versatility out wide and centrally.

Victor Lindelof missing the post-season tour coincides with Munro coming into the travelling squad, and that could be a like-for-like change that continues next season, with the 18-year-old central defender also capable of covering out wide on the right.
