How Liverpool parade incident suspect avoided the road closure to drive among fans

Following on from the horrific events that took place following Liverpool's Premier League trophy parade on Monday evening, police have now confirmed how the driver of the car involved in the incident was able to bypass road closure measures in place.

Arne Slot and his players were on an open-top bus parade after lifting the Premier League trophy one day earlier when news filtered through that there had been an incident, and it was later confirmed that a 53-year-old man had been arrested. Many were horrified at the events that unfolded on a day that was meant for celebration.

A new update from the police has revealed how they believe the suspect was able to get through the closed roads in the first place. Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, it was revealed that the reason behind the car's presence had been worked out.

Providing an update on the ongoing investigation, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims revealed that an ambulance was on its way to respond to a heart attack when the car followed it to get past a road closure and on to Water Street. Constable Sims said:

"It is believed the driver of the Ford Galaxy car involved in the incident was able to follow an ambulance on to Water Street after a road block was temporarily lifted, so that the ambulance crew could attend to a member of the public who was having a suspected heart attack."

She went on to reaffirm the earlier conclusion that the incident was not being treated as an act of terrorism: "As with many large events with event organisers, we plan for all contingencies, and this included the implementation of road closures to protect pedestrians and an armed policing presence was also in place throughout the day.

"There was no intelligence to suggest an incident of this nature would take place and, as we've previously stated, the incident is not being treated as terrorism."
