Yesterday, what should have been a day of joy and celebration turned into tragedy. As people gathered at a victory parade in Liverpool to celebrate Liverpool FC winning the Premier League, a car plowed into the crowds and injured 50 people.
Since then, investigations have been ongoing. Authorities have released statements, there have been multiple press conferences and a man remains in custody as more about what happened is becoming known. Here is a full timeline of the Liverpool victory parade incident, from the start to all the latest updates today.

The parade began at 2:30pm on Monday afternoon. It was to celebrate Liverpool FC’s Premier League win, and it has been estimated around a million people may have been in attendance.
The squad travelled by open-top bus through the crowds, and the route began at Allerton Maze and headed north along Queens Drive.
At 4pm, local police told people in attendance to ‘keep safe’
A message was sent out by Merseyside police at around 4pm, which reminded people to keep safe.
The Twitter statement said: “Please keep yourselves and other people safe during today’s #LFC Victory Parade by not climbing buildings, structures, scaffolding or street furniture. The parade route covers 10 miles and there are plenty of safe vantage points to see the LFC bus. Hope everyone has a great day!”.

Authorities were alerted to the incident at 6.07pm on Monday. It was first reported as a “car crash” involving a “number of pedestrians” on Water Street.
A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said on Monday: “NWAS is supporting an incident in Liverpool city centre, following reports of a road traffic collision. We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”

At around 8pm, a man was arrested
At around 8pm, a 53-year-old white British man was arrested. He is the driver of the Ford Galaxy car that plowed into people. Not much more is known about him, but it has been reported he is from the Liverpool area. The man remains in custody as investigations continue. Police said it is not being treated as a terror attack.
On Monday evening, Liverpool FC posted a statement
In the evening, Liverpool FC posted a statement to its website. “We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street which happened towards the end of the trophy parade earlier this evening,” it read.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident.We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”
At a 10:55pm press conference, it was confirmed 47 people had been injured

In a further update, David Kitchin of NWAS said: “We can confirm that our teams treated 20 patients at the scene for minor injuries, and these did not need hospital treatment. Twenty-seven patients in total were taken to hospital by ambulance, and we believe two of those, including one of the children, have sustained serious injuries.”
Assistant chief constable Jenny Sims also spoke out about the incident. She called it “horrific” and confirmed it had been declared a major incident.
“I want to thank all of the emergency services, partner agencies and members of the public who came to the assistance of the injured following this evening’s shocking incident, which we declared a major incident,” she said.
Fire and Rescue also issued a statement during the conference. “On arrival, the crews were met with numerous injured… and four persons trapped under a vehicle,” Nick Searle, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer said.
“Our crews rapidly lifted the vehicle, removed three adults and one child from beneath and passed them to our ambulance service colleagues. We then worked with emergency service partners to ensure casualties received medical treatment and transport to hospital as quickly as possible.”
He added: “My fire crews will maintain a visible and reassuring presence in the coming days and weeks.”

On Tuesday, Water Street remains closed and a police cordon is still in place. At the time, police were reported to still be investigating how a car was able to gain access to the road – which had been pedestrianised for the parade.
At 8am on Tuesday, four of the casualties were described as ‘very very ill’
Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram spoke this morning about those injured, and said four are “very very ill”.
He told BBC Five Live: “The actual incident in Water Street will live with those people for all the wrong reasons, and that’s where we have to really focus our minds. There are still four people who are very, very ill in hospital and we are hoping of course that they pull through very, very quickly.”

Just after lunchtime on Tuesday, King Charles posted a statement. He said he and Camilla are “deeply shocked and saddened” by what happened.
“It is truly devastating to see that what should have been a joyous celebration for so many could end in such distressing circumstances,” the statement said. “At this heartbreaking time for the people of Liverpool, I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need.”
The statement went on to express prayers and sympathy for those involved, and gratitude for the emergency services.
William and Kate also spoke out about the events
At around the same time, William and Kate also released a statement. Theirs also said they were “deeply saddened” by the incident. It also said the “joyful” event ended in “tragedy” and sent thoughts to those involved and the emergency services.
A further press conference confirmed more injuries
During a press conference at around 3pm on Tuesday afternoon, more injuries were confirmed. Assistant chief constable Jenny Sims said 50 people were injured, and 11 remain in hospital. They are all said to be in a stable condition and recovering well.
The man has been arrested suspicion of attempted murder
On Tuesday afternoon, authorities confirmed the man in custody has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He has also been arrested for dangerous driving offences, and driving while unfit through drugs.
‘Extensive’ CCTV inquiries are being made
At the same Tuesday conference, detective chief superintendent Karen Jaundrill said the investigation will carry on for days. She said Merseyside Police has received assistance from neighbouring forces.
It was said “extensive” CCTV inquiries are being made to track the movements of the Ford Galaxy leading up to the incident. The car is believed to have followed an ambulance through the blocked road.
