Leeds United have confirmed that the club will face AC Milan in the latest of a string of exciting pre-season friendlies ahead of a return to the Premier League – and Gary Kelly has responded.
Leeds had already announced two pre-season fixtures against Manchester United at the Strawberry Fields in Sweden on July 19, before playing host to La Liga giants Villarreal at Elland Road on the 2nd of August.
Reports earlier this month hinted that Leeds would be then taking on AC Milan in Ireland, a week before the start of the Premier League campaign. Now, Leeds have confirmed that is the case, they face Milan.
Milan endured a difficult 2024-25 season under the guidance of Stefano Pioli, finishing in eighth position and missing out on European qualification. But they did reach the final of the Coppa Italia this season.
Gary Kelly reacts as Leeds confirm they will face Milan in August
Gary Kelly is not often one to be in the press, but the Leeds legend has been speaking to Ireland’s official site after confirmation of Leeds facing Milan was announced. Kelly spoke of his excitement for the game.
“It’s going to be an exciting game, a great test for Leeds before their Premier League campaign kicks off. I have great memories of the last time we played Milan, captaining the side in the Champions League.
“Obviously as a proud Irishman I am delighted this fixture is coming to Dublin, which I know the locals will welcome, packing out the Aviva stadium and creating a great atmosphere,” Kelly said about the clash.

What happened when Leeds faced Milan in Champions League
Leeds and Milan of course, have history. The two sides met in the first group stage of the 2000-01 edition of the Champions League, playing both home and away. Lee Bowyer scored in a 1-0 win at Elland Road.

That was largely thanks to Dida fumbling his long-range effort. Then, in the San Siro, Dom Matteo scored from a corner – a momentous goal that continues to be sung around the Elland Road terraces to this day.
Leeds reached the semi-finals of the Champions League that year, eventually losing to Valencia over two legs but beating the likes of Milan, Besiktas, Lazio, Anderlecht and Deportivo La Coruna along the way.
