It’s no secret that the Sacramento Kings will be hunting for a point guard this offseason, and now an intriguing target has emerged for new general manager Scott Perry.
According to ClutchPoints‘ Brett Siegel, the Kings are interested in trading for Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday this offseason.
Holiday, a 15-year NBA veteran with six NBA All-Defensive Team nods, may become available this summer as the Celtics look to trim down a bloated payroll that has sunk them into the league’s second luxury tax apron. Boston is currently standing at $227.8 million in committed salary for the 2025-26 season.
According to a memo that was sent to NBA teams, the luxury tax lines for next season are set at $195.9 million (first apron) and $207.8 million (second apron). Tax penalties could prove costly for the Celtics if they don’t move under the second apron, which would include severe taxes and other penalties that could affect future draft picks.
This makes Holiday, a soon-to-be 35-year-old guard who is on the books for $32.4 million next season, a prime trade candidate as Boston looks to get its finances in order.
More on Jrue Holiday & the Kings
Jrue Holiday is a veteran player the Sacramento Kings have interest in, sources said. Whether or not Holiday is made available in trade talks by Boston is the ultimate question.
New GM Scott Perry has made it clear his team needs a true point guard, and he was always a fan of Holiday when he worked with the New York Knicks. Perry wanted to explore the possibility of adding Holiday in New York before he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2020, sources said. Sacramento enters the offseason with decisions needing to be made about DeMar DeRozan’s immediate future.

Does Jrue Holiday make sense for Sacramento?
After trading De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs in February, the Kings are currently without a legitimate starting point guard as they head into an offseason that has already brought them a new general manager (Scott Perry), assistant general manager (B.J. Armstrong), and head coach (Doug Christie).
In-house options include Malik Monk, who has looked better in a reserve role or as a shooting guard, and 2024 first-round pick Devin Carter, who is coming off a rookie season that was shortened by a shoulder injury.
During his introductory press conference, Perry made it clear that Sacramento would be prioritizing its search for a point guard this offseason, making this report the first of likely many that will include the Kings as potential suitors for floor generals across the league.
Holiday, who has three years and $104.4 million remaining on his contract (player option for $37.2 million in 2027-28), averaged 11. points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 44 percent from the field and 35 percent from deep over 62 games in 2024-25.
His presence as a defender would certainly aid the Kings’ defense, which has ranked near the bottom of the league for what seems like forever. Pairing Holiday with Keon Ellis in the backcourt could give Sacramento a strong defensive backcourt, while allowing Zach LaVine, Keegan Murray, Malik Monk, and Domantas Sabonis to carry the load on the offensive end.

Boston could have an interest in a Holiday-DeMar DeRozan swap as they navigate the start of next season without injured All-Star forward Jayson Tatum, who is recovering from a ruptured Achilles.
DeRozan’s contract–$24.5 million in 2025-26 and $10 million guaranteed for 2026-27–could be enticing for the Celtics, although a Holiday-DeRozan swap would need to include more filler on Sacramento’s end–potentially one of their many trade exceptions to bridge the gap.
Here’s what the Kings’ potential lineup would look like with Jrue Holiday in the fold:
PG – Jrue Holiday
SG – Keon Ellis
SF – Zach LaVine
PF – Keegan Murray
C – Domantas Sabonis
Buckle up, Kings fans. This Holiday report will be the first of many that includes Sacramento as a potential suitor for guards around the league as Perry looks to salvage this current core and avoid a full-scale rebuild.
