Championship news as Middlesbrough thorn expected to leave, while ex-Boro forward makes move

Thorn in Middlesbrough’s side Gus Hamer is expected to deliver a blow to Sheffield United’s promotion chances next season by leaving for the Premier League.

Hamer won the Championship Player of the Year award last season and was the man to break Boro hearts when Michael Carrick’s side made the play-offs in 2023. However, just as he did that summer when Coventry City missed out on promotion, Hamer is expected to leave Sheffield United this summer after their defeat at Wembley to Sunderland.

Talksport report that both Leeds United and Everton are interested in the star, who turns 28 next month. Keen to play Premier League football, the Blades are likely going to struggle to keep the forward this summer after the Brazilian-born star scored ten goals and claimed eight assists last season.

Former Boro man sold by Derby County

MK Dons have announced the signing of former Boro forward Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. The 33-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee, reuniting with Paul Warne at the League Two club. He wasn’t a free agent this summer, but Derby have decided to part with the former Boro forward anyway.

On the move, Mendez-Laing said: “I'm buzzing, happy to finally get this deal done! It's a project that I'm really excited about, and I can't wait to get going. I've always kept in touch with the gaffer (Paul Warne), he's someone I highly respect. When the conversation happened, there was instant interest from my side. He's a great and honest man.

"I've come from the Championship, which shows the project this club is aiming for and the type of person the gaffer is. I can't wait to get going, the facilities here are amazing and I've always loved playing at Stadium MK. As I said before, I can't wait to get going because it's an exciting season ahead.”

Championship star man in talks over exit

Another man who’s enjoyed a goal or two against Boro in recent years, Borja Sainz is in talks to leave Norwich City this summer. As the Canaries work to try and appoint Liam Manning this summer, the Bristol City boss could be arriving in his new post without the club’s star man at his disposal.

Sainz has just 12 months left on his contract at Carrow Road and has attracted plenty of interest after registering 22 goal contributions last term. Reports suggest he has already held talks with Athletic Bilbao over a move there this summer, while Villarreal are also said to be keen on the Spaniard.

Danny Rohl linked with another club

Danny Rohl faces an uncertain future as many jobs seem to be passing the Sheffield Wednesday boss by. After attempts to appoint him last season, Rohl was expected to be Southampton’s top target this summer, but the Saints instead opted to appoint Will Still.

Rohl has also been linked with the vacant Rangers role, which would see him oppose Boro in pre-season, but other positions such as RB Leipzig, Leicester City and Fulham don’t appear to be coming to fruition for the wantaway German.

Now though, reports suggest Werder Bremen in his native country are also keen to appoint the 36-year-old this summer as they announced the departure of Ole Werner. Rohl has earned an impressive reputation in his time at Sheffield Wednesday, but off-field issues with the Owls leaves Rohl keen to leave in favour of security elsewhere.
