Wrexham exploring major coup for“brilliant”Manchester United player amid significant twist in his future

Wrexham are exploring an incredibly ambitious bid to secure one of Manchester United’s “brilliant” players as they embark on their maiden Championship campaign.

The Manchester United 2024/25 season isn’t quite over, with two games left to play in Southeast Asia in a bid to raise money to help Sir Jim Ratcliffe cover some costs at the club, but three players have already been confirmed to be leaving this summer.

Before Rúben Amorim spoke to the fans at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, United confirmed that Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelöf would leave before the post-season tour, with Jonny Evans leaving after the tour.

Eriksen joined Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils in the summer of 2022, following a successful six months at Brentford, after being forced to leave Inter Milan due to Serie A’s regulations regarding heart implants. The Danish playmaker registered seven goals and 18 assists in his 106 appearances for the club.

Signing from Benfica, where he played alongside Amorim, Lindelöf joined United in 2017 prior to Jose Mourinho’s second season at the club. He went on to make 284 appearances for the club, winning the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.

Unlike the others, Evans enjoyed two impressive stints at Old Trafford, playing under Sir Alex Ferguson, Louis van Gaal, ten Hag and Amorim. The veteran centre half won three Premier League titles under Ferguson, as well as an FA Cup, two EFL Cups, four Community Shields, one Club World Cup and one Champions League.

Wrexham interested in free Evans transfer

Despite leaving the club, Evans has been confirmed to be travelling to Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong with United. However, he could be set for a move very soon after the trip ends, after a “brilliant” two seasons back at Old Trafford.

Wrexham have been promoted to the Championship after finishing in second place in League One to a very impressive Birmingham side. As they did in lower leagues, they could be looking for experienced players from higher divisions to join the club.

While in the National League, the Welsh club signed Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer, strikers with experience in higher leagues who could help take the club to the next level quickly. Palmer was signed from League One AFC Wimbledon, two divisions higher.

According to reports from The Sun, Wrexham could be looking to replicate this strategy in their first season as a Championship club, signing experienced Premier League players who are out of contract, in order to push for promotion immediately.

Evans, at 37, represents an almost perfect signing for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they look to push for promotion from the very first season. Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson and Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy are also named as potential options.

Many expected that Evans would retire from professional football once his contract with United ended, and a move to Wrexham would be both a major coup for the Welsh club and a significant pivot in Evans’ career.

Heaton to stay at United

Earlier this season, Fabrizio Romano reported that both Evans and Tom Heaton would be leaving United, with the possibility of both retiring. However, it appears that neither will retire, and Heaton could stay at Old Trafford.

After United’s win against Aston Villa, Old Trafford applauded as the stadium announcer confirmed that three players would depart the club, but he didn’t name Heaton amid reports that they may offer him a new contract.

While he hasn’t made a Premier League appearance, Heaton is another player who has enjoyed two stints at Old Trafford, with his first being under Sir Alex Ferguson.

He is valued in the dressing room, with some saying he has struck up a great friendship with Andre Onana and Bruno Fernandes, so he could be set to stay at United, with some reports suggesting he is in talks over a one-year extension.
