49ers dodge a bullet as Bills DE Joey Bosa suffers familiar injury setback

_**The 49ers wanted Joey Bosa this offseason, but his latest injury setback is now the Bills' problem and not that of San Francisco.**_

Yes, it would have been cool to watch the two brothers, defensive ends Joey Bosa and Nick Bosa, suit up alongside each other with the San Francisco 49ers.

It appeared imminent earlier this offseason, too, as the longtime Los Angeles Chargers defender seemed [destined to head up to Northern California](https://ninernoise.com/chargers-gift-49ers-perfect-opportunity-reunite-nick-bosa-joey-bosa-01jnp295dvz9) after the Bolts made him part of offseason roster cuts.

But the elder Bosa ultimately rebuffed the Niners and joined the Buffalo Bills, likely enticed by Buffalo remaining a top Super Bowl contender while getting quite the [sales pitch from quarterback Josh Allen](https://ninernoise.com/joey-bosa-reveals-how-josh-allen-s-sales-pitch-aided-in-rebuffing-the-49ers-01jp8jt20tzd).

San Francisco might be thanking Allen and Co. for convincing Bosa to head to New York instead of the Bay Area.

Joey Bosa injury news leaves 49ers breathing sigh of relief

-----------------------------------------------------------

The 2016 first-round pick has yet to play a snap for the Bills, and he might already be making Buffalo regret the offseason signing.

Speaking to reporters from offseason workouts, Bills head coach Sean McDermott revealed Bosa already is dealing with a calf injury that could sideline him well into the summer:

Bosa was relatively healthy in 2024 but appeared in just 14 regular-season games over the previous two years combined, so injuries are certainly a part of his reputation.

The 49ers would have relished the idea of pairing Bosa with his younger brother, Nick, but that would have gone against their offseason agenda of trying to get younger, cheaper and healthier.

After missing out on Joey Bosa, the Niners pivoted and grabbed former Georgia defensive end Mykel Williams in Round 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft, fully hoping he has a clean slate of health and plays well on the cheap over the next four-plus seasons.

Buffalo, meanwhile, has to hope the latest injury news doesn't sting too badly or linger into the regular season.

Good thing San Francisco doesn't have to worry about that problem.
