'Leader': What captain Nelson Semedo did in the canteen at Wolves' training ground last week

Nelson Semedo is very much in focus right now at Wolves, with speculation swirling about his future.

Nelson Semedo’s contract at Molineux is about to expire, and fans are bracing for his exit as a free agent.

Wolves fans serenaded Semedo after Wolves’ final game against Brentford on Sunday, and the captain gave an emotional interview after the game, perhaps suggesting he was going to leave.

But Semedo updated Wolves fans on social media on Monday about his current situation, saying he is yet to decide what he’ll do.

Semedo is a player who is really well respected at Wolves.

Since becoming captain he has really stepped up, and it is little wonder Vitor Pereira is so keen to keep hold of him.

That leadership was on show recently at Wolves’ training ground according to Dave Edwards.

But one good decision he did make was to hand Semedo the captain’s armband after the antics of Mario Lemina.

Semedo has brought calm to the squad, and has worn the armband well.

He’s not a Conor Coady, who was extremely vocal. But Semedo sets an example through conduct and performance, and those things extend beyond the pitch.

Dave Edwards has written a few words about Semedo in his latest column for the E&S, and shared something Semedo did in the canteen last week that impressed him.

He said: “He leads with such calmness. I know people at the club think the absolute world of him. His team-mates and the staff too.

“I was at Wolves’ training ground last week sitting in the canteen, he came in and shook every single person’s hand who was there as a guest – that is what you expect from a leader.

“The best moment of the game on Sunday was when he went out onto the pitch with the whole of his family, and all of the Southbank were roaring the Semedo song. They appreciate what he has done, and I am glad he has got the send-off – potentially if he does move on – that he deserved.”

Edwards thinks Semedo would be Wolves’ best ‘signing’ this summer, recently branding him one of the best wing-backs in the Premier League.

Semedo is a class act

If Semedo does go – and that is probably still the expectation – then he will be a big miss for Wolves.

Semedo should perhaps have more goals to his name for Wolves given the positions he gets himself into, and he can sometimes get his positioning wrong.

"It’s an honour to represent this club and lead this club as a captain. It’s a dream come true for me and I have to thank everyone who believed in me.”

But for the most part, the Portugal international is a dependable player for Wanderers.

And clearly, he’s someone who has leadership credentials. There’s a lot to be said for going round a room full of guests and greeting them.

He’s clearly a popular figure behind the scenes and it will be a great shame if he departs. But given his age and the potential for him to land a big signing-on bonus with another club, there’s every chance it happens.
