When Tom Brady stepped on stage in an Indy 500 ceremony he was greeted with the familiar sound of boos from Indianapolis fans.
Colts fans watched the seven-time Super Bowl winning quarterback have a two-decade run of dominance through the AFC while he was a member of the New England Patriots. During that time, the Patriots eliminated the Colts from the playoffs four times.
So when Brady got into Jimmie Johnson’s IndyCar two-seater and did a lap around the track prior to the start of the race, those in attendance showered Brady with boos.
It’s likely, given his history in Indy, that Brady was expecting the not-so-warm welcome. Afterwards, he took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the day, and took a subtle jab at Colts fans.
“What an incredible experience at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend,” Brady captioned the photo. “Thanks to the @foxsports family for putting on an incredible show, and to my friend, the best driver in the world and 7x champion @jimmiejohnson for letting me tag along as we led out the pack. I’ll be back, and next time I’m driving!!!
“PS: it was great to get in one more successful drive in front of a bunch of colts fans.”
The Colts are also the reason “Deflategate” was born. The team complained that the footballs used in the 2014 AFC Championship Game were under-inflated. The Patriots beat the Colts handily, 45-7.
This turned into an investigation that lasted over a year, and was a long drawn-out process that even made its way to the United States court system. Brady accepted the four-game suspension, though, and helped lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl XLIX win over the Seattle Seahawks.
