Manchester United have made contact with Wolverhampton Wanderers to formally negotiate a transfer for Matheus Cunha, according to David Ornstein.
The Red Devils are expected to make the Brazilian forward their first major signing of the summer transfer window, but the talks over this deal have already been dragging on for some time.
Cunha is keen on heading to Old Trafford, and the club's lack of European football is in no way a dealbreaker for the 25-year-old. Despite this, the deal has still not been completed.
The versatile attacker has a €74 million release clause in his deal, which can be paid off in three instalments between now and 2027. Man Utd had been expected to trigger this clause, but David Ornstein of The Athletic now reports that formal talks with Wolves have been opened.
By triggering the clause, Man Utd would have bypassed Wolves entirely, but they are now seeking to thrash out a deal with their Premier League rivals in order to get a better payment structure for themselves.
Man Utd want more Cunha instalments
The transfer insider reports that Man Utd have made contact with Wolves in order to increase the number of instalments stipulated in his contract.
The Red Devils are still willing to match the €74m price of his clause, but they would prefer to pay off this fee over the course of five years rather than two.

Man Utd have made an opening offer for Wolves to consider, but the Molineux side are planning to stand firm and demand Cunha's contractual obligations to be met.
Despite this attempted renegotiation, Ornstein still expects Man Utd to complete the signing of Cunha. The Red Devils have made him their absolute top priority for the summer window, and Cunha himself spoke glowingly of Ruben Amorim earlier on Tuesday.
