Liverpool must turn their attention elsewhere after major Premier League rival enters race for Rayan Cherki - opinion

Rayan Cherki has been an extremely hot topic in the footballing world over the last few weeks due to his ridiculously cheap release clause at Lyon.

Cherki has been in some of the best form of his career over the last year or so and has proven that he has plenty of potential to fill as he gets older.

Liverpool are one of the many teams to have been rumoured to have an interest in the attacking midfielder, but with their recent links to Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, talks around Cherki seem to have died down.

Indeed, no outlets have yet said that Arne Slot’s men are explicitly out of the race, but after this fresh update about his future, it feels pointless for the club to try and show their hand, even though Liverpool have been linked previously.

Manchester City want to sign Rayan Cherki this summer

As per a report from The Telegraph, Manchester City are now eyeing the French playmaker in the hope that he’ll be able to fill the void left by Kevin De Bruyne.

The number 10 is still only 20 years old, with the report outlining that Cherki’s release clause is worth somewhere around £20-25million, which for a player of his calibre, is very minimal.

The report goes on to say that the transfer of Cherki to City is a ‘live possibility.’

And, while Liverpool will no doubt have the money to compete with the Cityzens, with Wirtz likely to be coming in, a move for Cherki shouldn’t be all that high on the Reds’ priority list.

How do Rayan Cherki’s statistics compare to Florian Wirtz’s?

When talk of Wirtz being available this summer was first shared, three teams were heavily linked with making a move.

Those teams being Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich, however, it was the Reds who came out on top, with the German choosing to take the next step in his career at Merseyside.

Both Wirtz and Cherki had fairly prolific campaigns this season, and while Wirtz may be older, with that comes an awful lot more experience.

Even though both are young, when coming into the Premier League, it’s a completely different ball game.

Of course, only time will tell what the future has in store for both players, but on the face of things, especially with Liverpool’s interest in Wirtz, a move for Cherki doesn’t make all that much sense anymore.
