Matheus Cunha has all but confirmed his move to Manchester United

Matheus Cunha has all but confirmed he will join Manchester United this summer, even after Wolves rejected their opening bid. The star has a £62.5million release clause in his contract with the Midlands club, though United are yet to officially activate it.

Personal terms have been agreed though and the Brazilian appears to be heading to Old Trafford. Cunha starred in Wolves' successful battle to beat the drop this season.

He scored 17 goals and add six assists to earn Wolves' Players' Player of the Season award. United have long been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, with boss Ruben Amorim desperate to boost his attacking options.

The Red Devils registered the fifth-lowest amount of goals in the Premier League this term. Amorim has selected Cunha as one of two key deals he wants to get done, with Ipswich's Liam Delap being the other.

United appear to be keen to move quickly to secure the Wolves man. But it seems their financial problems are having an impact on their negotiations.

According to The Athletic, United have requested to pay Cunha's release clause over five years rather than the required two. Wolves are resisting that approach though and are standing firm, formally rejecting that opening offer.

Despite the current impasse, there is an expectation on all sides that an agreement will be reached for the forward to join United. And Cunha himself also appears certain that a deal will be reached between the two clubs.

"Talking about him is easy, I think he's a great coach and I wish him nothing but the best," Cunha told CNN Brasil via Daily Mail. "I hope he conquers the world as he did Portugal," asked if they could do that together, he added: "Well, God willing, we'll always do our best to help."

Amorim is keen to bring in a new No.10 to play behind the striker in his 3-4-2-1 system. According to the BBC, the release clause in Cunha's contract is required to be paid in full after the 2026/27 season.

United boss Amorim has warned that his club may struggle to complete deals this summer due to their financial situation. He said: "We have a plan that is to bring [in] some new players.

"Our big plan is to improve the team we have and improve the academy as that is our future, as it was in past. It’s not going to change so much. We have financial fair play rules, so we are not allowed to do so much this summer.

“The important thing is to stick together. We are going to struggle and it is not going to be everything right away. I have a feeling the team is improving and that is the most important thing.”
